SUMMARY:

The job of Director of Transportation was established for the purpose(s) of planning, organizing, and directing the transportation department; preparing and managing the annual budget for the department; ensuring optimal utilization of personnel and other resources; coordinating and maintaining a safe student transportation system within the requirements of the federal and state standards, insurance regulations, and policies of the Board of Education; management of the district’s fleet of buses and other vehicles; and coordinating the district safety program and protocols.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Proven experience with public transportation scheduling, reporting, with a minimum of three years in a supervisory capacity. Demonstrate knowledge of health and safety regulations, financial and management practices, supervision and motivation of personnel, and federal, state, and local regulations regarding transportation. Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license for the type of equipment to be driven, with no serious violations. Working knowledge of bus repair and maintenance. Knowledge and experience with purchasing including large dollar items on a bid basis.

SALARY:

Salary is commensurate to experience on our Director of Transportation Salary Schedule. Current pay range is $80,000 to $100,000 per year.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead, organize, manage, and supervise all transportation operations of the district in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and Board of Education policies and procedures. Develop and implement a maintenance plan for the upkeep of all District fleet. Assist in the creation/revision process for policies and regulations within the department. Supervise department personnel that includes recruitment, selection, time keeping functions, and evaluation processes. Monitor and recommend systems and procedures to ensure the security of all students while utilizing District vehicles. Develop and recommend department budget, and then administer the approved budget, completing all required documentation. Approve the specifications and recommend contractors to perform maintenance and repair services to District fleet vehicles, using established district procedures. Supervise and inspect the work performed and recommend payment upon satisfactory completion of work. Coordinates schedules and special event operations for the purpose of ensuring required transportation preparation. Develop and implement in-service programs and activities for staff members. Advises Superintendent on road hazards for decision on school closing during inclement weather. Maintains certification on underground fuel tanks and trains all personnel on fueling procedures. Administer a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurriculars. Inspect and assume the responsibility for the official and safe operation of school buses and other school vehicles assigned to the transportation department. Conduct driver education programs for school bus and small vehicle drivers. Takes an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses in cooperation with school administrators. Acts as liaison with parents for complaints and special requests regarding transportation. Operate electronic and other equipment needed to carry out job functions and responsibilities. Maintain effective communication with students, staff, and parents. Assist the administration and appropriate emergency personnel with any emergency, or potentially dangerous situations. Protect confidentiality of records and information about staff, and students and use discretion when sharing such information within legal confines. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the Superintendent, and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond professionally to questions from groups of parents, community members, commissions, colleagues, and Board of Education. Mathematical Skills:

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as interest, discounts, proportions, and percentages. Reasoning Ability:

Ability to identify problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to analyze and use data to supervise the delivery of instruction and the school improvement process. Technology Skills:

Proficient use of technology which includes basic operations and concepts, word processing, spreadsheets, internet usage, critical evaluation of information, data analysis, email, and integration of technology. Other Skills And Abilities:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to copy, coordinate, instruct, evaluate, and negotiate. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and talk or hear. The use of strength to lift items as needed. Occasionally, yet essential to this position, the individual must meet deadlines with severe time constraints, interacting with the public and other workers.
