JOB SUMMARY:
The Senior Director of Finance will play a key leadership role in the financial management of Communities In Schools of South Carolina. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of accounting, budget planning, forecasting, and financial operations to ensure sound fiscal stewardship and compliance with applicable regulations. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in nonprofit accounting and be adept at managing multi-year budgets, forecasts, and grant administration. Responsible for implementing and maintaining internal controls to safeguard financial resources and promote transparency within the organization. The Senior Director of Finance will collaborate with the President & CEO and Executive Team to drive strategic financial initiatives, monitor financial performance, and provide actionable insights to support decision-making. This position offers the opportunity to shape the financial strategy of an impactful nonprofit organization while ensuring the effective stewardship of resources in support of CISSC’s mission.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Financial Management
Lead and manage the full cycle of nonprofit accounting, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and financial reporting following GAAP.
Manage all financial monitoring and reporting.
Manage cash flow, investment strategies, and ensure the organization’s liquidity and financial stability.
Maintain and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices.
Monitor endowment fund investments, analyzing performance, and preparing reports for staff leadership and board oversight.
Budget Planning and Forecasting
In partnership with the President & CEO, develop and oversee the annual budget planning process.
Monitor and manage the organization’s budget throughout the fiscal year, providing regular variance reports and recommending adjustments as needed.
Prepare budget scenarios and sensitivity analyses to evaluate the potential impacts of different financial decisions or funding changes.
Lead the development of multi-year financial forecasts, considering changes in funding streams, operational growth, and external economic factors.
Audit
Lead the annual audit process, coordinating with external auditors and ensuring timely and accurate completion.
Review and address any audit findings or recommendations, developing corrective action plans where necessary to strengthen internal controls or financial practices.
Present the audit results to the executive leadership team and board of directors, explaining findings, implications, and any necessary follow-up actions.
Grants and Contracts
Oversee the administration and reporting of grants, ensuring compliance with funder requirements and timely submission of financial reports.
Incorporate restricted and unrestricted funding into the overall budget, ensuring compliance with funder guidelines.
Finance Department
Supervise and lead the Finance Department and Staff.
Oversee recruitment, training, and performance management of finance staff.
Manage the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 6-10 years of financial management or accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization.
Bachelor’s degree in finance, business, accounting or similar field required [CPA or advanced degree preferred].
Required understanding and practical knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles.
Experience managing $4M+ budgets.
Experience with external audits and in-house financial management in a high-growth organization.
Experience in nonprofit finance, grant administration and accounting regulations.
Advanced knowledge of financial accounting systems and software: QuickBooks Online.
Experience and with Microsoft365 and Excel.
Must have a valid South Carolina driver’s license and current automobile insurance.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Fiscally conservative.
Ability to provide and experience with multi-year budget projections and planning.
Ability to communicate financial reports and concepts to stakeholders.
Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with – programmatic and development teams who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
Track record in grants management.
High level of professionalism.
Excellent communication and relationship building skills.
Experience leading a team and supervision of staff.
