Definition Under general supervision from the Transportation Manager, safely transports children to and from school and extra-curricular activities in a time-efficient manner.
Primary Job Functions Primary functions may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions within this classification. Examples of Tasks
Drives school bus on a daily pre-established route. Communicates in a clear professional manner with students, parents and personnel staff. Coordinates with Student Transportation Coordinator on any changes in normal duties, routes, or new student passengers. Picks up and delivers only authorized students to assigned bus stops; ensures all students have departed bus prior to departing the stop location. Makes sure assigned routes are on time in accordance with the schedule. Sustains order and discipline by abiding by the established safety rules for the bus. Reports and documents unruly behaviors to appropriate personnel. Ensures that the communication device (e.g. two-way radio) is in proper working order before each trip. Conducts pre-trip & post trip bus inspections. Maintains Driver Vehicle Inspection Report in respect to daily safety checks. Obeys all traffic regulations as outlined in CDL manual, Bus Driver Handbook and local ordinances. Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses and keeps all emergency exits clear of obstructions. Reports all accidents immediately, as required. Provides transportation services for extracurricular activities outside of normal scheduled work hours, as assigned. Conducts semi-annual bus evacuation drills as required by the Department of Education. Immediately notifies departmental supervisor in writing of any mechanical problems and/or repairs. With the assistance of Bus Monitors, ensures all children are in age appropriate child safety restraints at all times during transportation. Attends departmental meetings and in-service trainings, as scheduled. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit. Knowledge of:
History, culture, traditions, and customs of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the geographic layout Community and state ordinances and laws that govern the operation of a school bus Skilled in:
Interacting with children of all ages Safely operating a large commercial motor vehicle Reading and interpreting map coordinates Ability to:
Interpret the laws, rules, and regulations associated with the daily operation of a school bus Maintain student discipline and ensure that student behavior is not a distraction to safe driving Follow oral and written instructions, and policies and procedures Install car seat or other restraining devices on a school bus, as needed Sit 70% of the day, stand, bend, crouch, or stoop 30% of the time Lift up to fifty pounds (50lbs) occasionally Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to handle control, or feel objects, tools or controls; use foot controls to drive; reach with hands and arms; climb; bend, stoop, and kneel. The employee must be physically able to perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures. This includes the pushing/pulling of up to 50 pounds. In addition have the ability to use emergency exits at any location on the bus. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, night/dusk vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Must have a valid unrestricted Arizona Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and School Bus endorsements, Arizona School Bus Driver Certification
or
demonstrate the ability to obtain CDL, and Passenger and School Bus certifications, Arizona School Bus Driver certification within one (1) year of the date of hire. AZ DPS Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card and basic first aid and CPR certification are required at the time of hire. Must possess a valid Arizona Driver's License for the class of vehicle operated. Must have at least one (1) year of experience in the class of vehicle operated.
Underfill Eligibility:
An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
Terms of Employment:
This position is treated as a full-time non-exempt position scheduled for 40 hours per week.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
