The Interim Chief of Staff will work in close collaboration with the President and CEO and the leadership team to implement strategic initiatives, managing processes and information flow, and assist in the smooth running of the organization, including the Board of Directors. The Chief of Staff is a member of, and works closely with, Freedom House’s Executive Team. The Chief of Staff is a leadership role, with any direct reports to be determined. The Interim Chief of Staff will work in the DC office a minimum of two days per week, in coordination with the President and CEO as well as the executive team. This position is designed to be have a duration of less than 12 months. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

General: Coordinate amongst senior staff; setting meeting agendas; surfacing topics; building consensus; Define the confine for all-staff meetings and working with administrative staff to coordinate; Coordinate board relations and support; Guide and oversee internal communications; Help to shape organizational strategy and political positioning including through coordination and consultation across organizational constituencies; Advise and consult on staffing and leadership issues; Generate options and advise on both internal and external policy issues; Additional duties may include cross-pillar coordination on key organizational priorities, and facilitating coordination within and among Executive Team members. Office of the President: Drive information sharing among the President and CEO, the Executives, and the teams to keep staff informed and show how the day-to-day work of the organization aligns with strategy. Make sure the President and CEO is prepared for strategic engagement in upcoming meetings by ensuring he has all the information necessary to be productive and engaged. Ensure follow-up from meetings, including communicating outcomes to relevant parties, and follow-up with internal and external stakeholders. Serve as an honest broker, adviser, truth teller, and confidante to the President and CEO, as they work together for continued organizational success and growth in service of Freedom House’s mission and vision. Respond to inquiries on behalf of the President and CEO, coordinating with relevant Freedom House staff. Oversee special projects and initiatives at the President and CEO’s direction. Act as eyes, ears and guide to incoming President and CEO helping to foster relationship building with staff and the establishment of effective and well-received leadership systems and approaches Board Management: Assist in coordinating all matters related to the Executive Board and Board of Trustees as well as Committees. Strategically prepare the President and CEO and the Executive Team for Board and Committee meetings, including agenda setting, convening and leading internal preparation meetings, and coordinating the substance and process of Board materials. Lead on Trustee engagement and stewardship opportunities, including Ensuring that Trustees are notified about and included in appropriate Freedom House events Keeping Trustees “top of mind” when thinking about events, articles/books, and ways that they can be helpful (without over-using them and mindful of their governance role, as opposed to operations). Ensuring that the President and CEO has “touched” all Trustees regularly and provided adequate attention Tracking communications between staff and Trustees to ensure appropriate coordination and follow-up

In partnership with the Special Assistant, maintain accurate electronic Board meeting files and folders. Work with the President and CEO, Chair of the Board, and Committee Chairs to review and maintain by-laws and other governance documents. QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Public or Business Administration, International Affairs, Public Policy or similar field; Master’s degree preferred. Experience: 10+ years of experience in a relevant position Proven experience working closely and using expert judgment with executives and boards in a business or executive management role. Deep knowledge of Freedom House’s work Proven experience organizing and collaborating across multiple teams and departments, with the ability to build trusted relationships throughout the organization. Experience working on democracy and human rights issues desired. Proven success in a project management role. Technical Skills and Abilities: Excellent written and oral communication skills. Extremely versatile; able to prioritize and perform multiple tasks with excellent attention to detail and the ability to set and meet deadlines and drive projects to conclusion. Nimble business mind with a focus on developing creative solutions. Strong project reporting skills, with a focus on inter-departmental communication. Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and exhibit unquestionable integrity, honesty, and forthrightness. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to respond promptly to inquiries in a courteous and professional manner. Ability to successfully work collaboratively with all levels of employees, management, external partners, and funders. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point). Salaries are commensurate with experience and based on pay grades that prioritize equity across the organization. The hiring range will be based on the local salary market in which the candidate is hired. Hiring range for this role performed in the US is between $160,000 to $200,000 annualized, dependent upon experience.
