Job Summary
Performs technical procedures in a research laboratory under minimal supervision by applying standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. The University of Utah's Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Core Facility is hiring a full-time, entry level Lab Technician. This Core profiles the proteome of a broad range of biological materials in addition to customized analysis for targeted peptides and is hiring a meticulous, well-organized person to digest protein and processes biological samples prior to nanoLC-MS/MS mass spectrometric analyses.
Responsibilities 1. Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommends modifications as needed. 2. Performs specialized tests and procedures using complex equipment. 3. Procures supplies and materials needed for laboratory research. 4. Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research. 5. Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results. 6. Orders supplies and experimental materials needed to conduct research.7. Digests protein and prepares biological materials for nanoLC-MS/MS mass spectrometry-based analysis.8. Under supervision of senior laboratory personnel, handles the disposal of chemical waste.9. Maintains excellent laboratory notebook documentation and precisely follows standard operating procedures (SOPs). Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required. OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
Preferences -A BS/BA or higher degree in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or related field.-OSHA training and certification in chemical hygiene and blood borne pathogens-Ability to precisely and carefully follow lab protocols and procedures for sample handling, operating instruments, reporting results, and communicating with users of the Facility.-Strong computer skills and ability to carefully operate sophisticated instruments.-Excellent English communication skills.-Professional work ethic with colleagues and users of the Proteomics and Metabolomics Core.
