Nurse Practitioner / Physician Assistant
Primary Purpose:
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for the assessment of patients in student health services (SHS). The NP or PA performs physical examinations, confers with patients in person and by phone/electronically, collaborates with others in the department to assure smooth flow of patient care consistent with established quality indicators and participates in the overall coordination of patient care. The NP or PA reports to the director of health services, with clinical supervision from the supervising physician. The NP or PA contributes to SHS health and wellness educational activities, outreach and presentations. The NP or PA collaborates with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) providers and other campus partners to ensure continuity and coordination of care. This is a 4 day, 32 hours/week position based on the Stockton campus. Essential Functions:
Practices under the standard procedure established for the NP or PA role consistent with Student Health Services policy and in accordance with requirement set forth by the California Board of Registered Nursing or the Physician Assistant Board. Conducts age appropriate assessments of patients, including history taking and physical examination consistent with department protocol. Performs assessment/data collection in an on-going systematic manner, focusing on physiologic, psychosocial, cultural, spiritual and cognitive status, patient education, family involvement, and patient advocacy. Diagnosis and treatment of common acute minor illnesses and injuries, follow-up management of stable chronic diseases, provides preventive health care information and guidance. Consults with supervising physician or other clinicians as dictated by patient need and assessment findings. Participates with physicians and other clinicians in the department to assure effective patient care consistent with quality indicators for patients cared for in the designated service. Reviews medical record for follow up or ordering of diagnostic studies under established protocols. Establishes and maintains communication with other health care providers and departments to ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness and to promote consistency and continuity of care. Establishes effective working relationships with members of the health care team, college community, patients, and families. Delegates appropriately and coordinates duties/activities of health care team members. Evaluates effectiveness of care given by team members. Demonstrates knowledge of and applies safety principles as identified by the institution. - Performs efficiently in emergency situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for own professional practice. Participates regularly in staff development activities for department personnel. Demonstrates knowledge of legal issues, including patient confidentiality and risk management in all aspects of patient care and unit functioning. Participates in department Performance Improvement activities. Participates in program review and student learning activities as requested. Identifies and solves problems effectively. Demonstrates a service philosophy in all interactions with patients, colleagues, and all members of the University community. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of computers and telecommunication modalities to document, track and convey information. Facilitate health education both individually and to groups on campus as assigned. Collaborates with director and supervising physician to establish and implement clinical policies and procedures. Seeks opportunities to promote professional and personal growth through available academic facilities and continuing education activities. Works as a member of Student Health Services performing all other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications:
Masters prepared nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Experience practicing in a primary care, urgent care, or college health setting. Possess and maintain an active licensure in the state of California as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) or Adult Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA). Possess and maintain a current National Certification as a Family or Adult Nurse Practitioner by American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or Physician Assistant Certification from the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE). Experience working with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system. Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillator (CPR/AED) certification. If you are a Nurse Practitioner - possess and maintain active CA Furnishing License. Does not apply to Physician Assistant. Preferred Qualifications:
Possess and maintain active Current DEA License. Experience practicing in a higher education setting. Women's health care experience. Experience conducting health education programming for a community. Experience developing policy and procedures. Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting. Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.
