Joby Aviation is seeking a Methods and Allowables Engineer to join our growing stress and analysis team. This role is a key position within the team as the company quickly moves towards FAA certification. The applicant will be expected to create validated standards and procedures for substantiation of various types of aircraft structural components. Candidates are expected to have extensive experience in stress analysis or materials and process engineering for aircraft and be intimately familiar with FAA Certification and existing standards. Prior experience with small aircraft certification is a must. The selected candidate will have a unique opportunity to have a high-level influence on Joby’s design and analysis standards. Responsibilities
Establish validated analysis methods based on current industry standard practices Prepare test plans and test methods to validate analysis methods and generate statistical design values for use in sizing Produce white papers outlining novel substantiation approaches Build and experimentally validate efficient, semi-automated tools for analysis of composite panels (monolithic or stiffened), metallic details, and joints Create report templates Required
B.S. in aerospace, mechanical, civil engineering, or another relevant discipline 5+ years of experience creating analysis documents in FAA certification context Excellent understanding of composite materials failure modes Understanding of statistical basis (A-Basis or B-Basis) Proficiency with engineering calculations tools (Python, VBA, FORTRAN, etc.) Ability to deliver detailed analysis templates, reports and certification documents. Strong understanding of Finite Element Analysis and classical hand calculation methods Composite Damage Tolerance experience Desired
M.S. in relevant discipline 10+ years of working in small aircraft structural certification Extensive experience performing tests, analysis and correlation of composite or metallic structures Understanding of analysis, substantiation, and the linkage of process integrity to the methods for bonded joints EEO
Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $140,500 - $231,600/year. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Joby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more.
