Job Overview The Executive Director, School Development manages a large and complex fundraising program with complex constituencies and programs, typically through a large professional staff, including both fundraising and non-fundraising professionals (e.g., editors, information systems, public relations) as well as related administrative support staff. Reviews and approves recommendations for operational planning and control. Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of department, division, or campus and/or medical center. May manage personal portfolio of high capacity individuals and/or corporations and foundations. The Executive Director of School Development occupies a key position in UCSF’s development and alumni relations program and in the professional schools and graduate programs across the campus. The Executive Director provides strategic leadership and oversight of the major and principal gift programs for the Schools of Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy, the Graduate Division, the School of Medicine’s education mission, the Library, and UCSF Fresno. He/she establishes and leads a staff of trained and motivated development professionals to meet established fundraising objectives in these areas, and partners with university leaders, faculty/physicians, staff, and volunteers to grow philanthropic support. The UCSF Foundation and the Office of University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) are responsible for fostering and strengthening the campus outreach efforts to UCSF constituents and for garnering private support for the campus. In raising private support, UDAR identifies, qualifies, solicits and stewards donors for the schools, medical centers, departments and programs on campus; accepts and administers all private gifts to the university through The Regents or the UCSF Foundation; and manages all alumni relations activities, campus support group activities and campus events. The UDAR office staffs the UCSF Foundation. The office is also responsible for the design and implementation of fundraising campaigns for UCSF. About UCSF

Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training Ten or more years of experience in development (or equivalent applicable experience) with minimum seven years of fundraising experience in academic medicine or a medical organization Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations, including principles, concepts, techniques and procedures Advanced knowledge of design and implementation of identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies and techniques Advanced skills to conceive, design, implement and evaluate effective fundraising programs. Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, persuasively articulate and implement development programs of comparable size and complexity including the ability to envision and present future direction Advanced knowledge of leadership and management principles, concepts, techniques, etc. Advanced knowledge of the campus and/or medical center, its achievements, vision, mission, goals, objectives and issues of concern both on campus and/or medical center as well as in higher education, research and medical care or clinical operations Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships within all organizational levels and with outside constituencies Advanced skills to meet predetermined goals and objectives, including securing gifts and meeting fundraising objectives Advanced strategic planning, critical thinking, analytical and persuasion/negotiation skills The personal energy, enthusiasm, tenacity and drive to achieve institutional goals The credibility, sound judgment and superb communication skills to effectively engage senior leadership, faculty, and key volunteers in the fundraising process Advanced political acumen skills Management and administrative skills to organize, direct, motivate and evaluate other senior professionals and high-level volunteers. Interpersonal skills to interact harmoniously with academic leaders, faculty, donors and volunteers Advanced leadership/management skills, including skills to select, train, mentor, motivate and evaluate all levels of staff Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with varied internal and external constituencies The ability to work across the School programs to create a strong and consistent message to its constituencies, set programmatic goals, create accountability measures, and lead and inspire a large staff to meet and exceed expectations, within the context of current campaigns and ongoing fundraising initiatives The ability to identify, cultivate, and solicit a portfolio of prospective donors for the Schools, departments, and centers which fall within the School Development team Preferred Qualifications
