The Institute for International Economic Policy ( IIEP )

at the Elliott School conducts non-partisan research on global economic issues, aiming to develop effective policies amid international controversies. The work of IIEP covers five research areas: international development, international economic policy, international finance, international trade, and sustainable economic growth. The institute currently has six signature initiatives: global economic governance, U.S.-China economic relations, envisioning India, climate change and sustainable cities, economics of poverty and inequality, and local sustainable governance. IIEP and its 58 faculty affiliates organize five major annual conferences: GW Africa, GW China, GW India, GW Sustainable Development (with the World Bank), and GW Urbanization (with the World Bank).

To support the IIEP mission, programs, and initiatives, we seek an outstanding and motivated individual to be the

Program Manager, IIEP

, a senior level position reporting to the Director of IIEP . This role will serve as the main point of contact for the Institute and regularly interacts with faculty, staff, students, visiting scholars, guest speakers, and partners and other stakeholders. The Program Manager will closely collaborate and coordinate with Elliott School colleagues in finance, development and alumni relations, sponsored research, and other research institutes and academic offices as needed.

In close collaboration with the Institute Director , the key responsibilities include: Program Development, Management, and Outreach Oversees and administers activities associated with special initiatives, program development, and project planning related to educational activities. Assists the Director in strategic planning, setting policies and priorities, and programming delivery. Oversees event planning and logistics for multiple annual conferences, meetings, and special events in person and virtually. Coordinates events and Institute promotion through managing the Institute’s website and social media accounts. Manages programs enrollments and participants. Maintain communication and other outreach efforts with the program constituencies, including existing donors. May support the Director with building relationships. Supports the Director with strategic partnerships with internal and external partners.

Budget Management

In close collaboration with the Director, helps manage the institute’s fiscal affairs and operations, including oversight and administration of R-funds’ budgets (as well as any ancillary programs/grants). Works with IIEP Director to prepare annual budgets, including budgeting funds for affiliated programs, individual faculty grants, and faculty REIA /Directorship funds. Prepares, tracks, reviews and approves reimbursements, purchase orders, and invoices. Reviews and prepares reports ( NSF HERD , HEA , Monthly Budget Report) and correspondence to assure compliance with federal regulations, university rules, departmental guidelines and funding requirements as appropriate. Tracks student workers’ pay against monthly budgets. Collaborates with and seeks guidance from ESIA finance team as needed.

Administrative Management

Oversee day-to-day office operations and organization, supply purchasing, maintenance requests, space and equipment management, and IT requests. Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a large cohort of student employees and temporary employees. Includes scheduling and timecard management. Updates and maintains personnel records including timesheets.

Grants and Sponsored Projects

Coordinates with the Director, research administrators, and Principal Investigators on grant activities. May support the Director with grant proposal and budget development, re-application, budget tracking, ensuring compliance with sponsor guidelines, and assisting with closeout procedures. May assist the Director in identifying and pursuing new short- and long-term funding opportunities. Communicates with sponsors to provide progress reports.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

This is a hybrid position with some days in-person in Washington, DC and some days remote.

Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications: 2+ years of program coordination experience in higher education, a research or policy institute, and/or an international development organization is highly desired. Strong interest and experience in international affairs, international economics, international development and/or sustainability is preferred. A Masters degree in a relevant field is highly desired. Conference/event planning and programming experience including oversight of support staff is highly desired. Experience with budget monitoring and interest in learning more. Experience with and/or interest in supervising students workers or part-time employees. Experience with and/or interest in managing sponsored projects (grants). Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Excellent professional decorum and ability to interact with students, faculty, executive leadership, alumni, donors, external partners (such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, etc.), and international guests. Ability to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, problem solve. Skill in using common business software i.e. Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Adobe Suite, Tableau.
