Vice President, Research & Development
Responsibilities: Lead a world-class group of scientists in the design and development of new chemical ingredients for all Colonial markets. Prepare annual and 3-year rolling budgets for R&D and manage within that budget. Assist in drafting and submitting patent applications for new Colonial technologies. Become familiar with Colonial manufacturing methods and perform synthesis experiments in the laboratory as needed in support of new product development. Represent R&D in all internal meetings including management meetings, market business meetings, process improvement meetings, and other meetings in support of everyday business activities. Guide the research activities of Colonial Chemical’s external consultants. Participate in process improvement efforts and provide technical support to the manufacturing plant for new and existing products. Consult with and support the quality control department and provide technical input as required. Communicate effectively with personnel from Quality Control, Production, and Management. Interact with sales representatives and customers to address technical issues and explore solutions and innovations for our customers. Occasional travel to trade shows or customer sites with sales personnel is expected. QUALIFICATIONS: A PhD in organic chemistry and 10 years R&D experience with a chemical company involved in developing and manufacturing new ingredients for the personal care, HI&I, and Lubricants markets. 5 years of progressive management experience. A proven track record in the design and development of new chemical ingredients, preferably with a track record of publications and patents. Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications, preferably chemical drawing software. Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to represent Colonial Chemical with its customers and trade associations. Will require occasional travel both domestically and internationally.
