Stony Brook University: Health Sciences: Renaissance School of Medicine: Psychiatry and Behavioral Health
Location:
Stony Brook, New York Open Date:
Dec 09, 2024 Deadline:
Jan 09, 2025 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time Description
The Department of Psychiatry at the Renaissance School of Medicine is seeking an innovative and technically-skilled investigator to establish a research program focused on uncovering the computational mechanisms underlying behavior and brain function in health and psychiatric illness. This may include the development and implementation of computational algorithms, machine learning models such as convolutional neural networks, and/or other innovative and explanatory computationally-based approaches. The ideal candidate will use and integrate these techniques with human neuroimaging approaches, such as functional MRI, and will apply them to the study of psychiatric diseases. The ideal candidate will have a research program dedicated to understanding core psychological and neural mechanisms, such as basic processes of reward and value, which underlie behavior and clinical symptoms across multiple different diseases. First or senior-author publications and/or external grant funding are required for demonstrating the candidate's experience and scientific impact with using these computational and neuroimaging tools. In addition to establishing their own lab and research program, the candidate is expected to build strong collaborations within the Department of Psychiatry, providing measurable and high-level contributions to the grants and manuscripts of other investigators. Comfort with team-based and multiple-investigator science is critical. Resources for equipment, space, and additional research support are available to support this important initiative. Collaborations with investigators outside the Department of Psychiatry and across the institution (e.g., computer science, biomedical engineering, psychology, etc.) are encouraged as warranted. Stony Brook Psychiatry is home to a world-class, interdisciplinary team of investigators with robust, extramurally funded research programs. Current focus areas include schizophrenia, depression, dementia, and substance use disorders. The Department also leads multiple large cohort studies for understanding normal and psychopathological developmental trajectories. Stony Brook maintains a broad range of pre-clinical and clinical research cores, including fMRI, PET, ECT, and TMS and the full range of clinical psychiatric inpatient and outpatient services. Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. Degree (or foreign equivalent). Full-time availability. Research publications and/or external grant funding on computational modeling and human neuroimaging as applied to healthy and psychiatric populations. Preferred Qualifications:
Evidence of team-based science, including cross-laboratory grants and/or publications; research focus on understanding the mechanisms of reward, value, and other psychological constructs that have relevance for hedonia and anhedonia. Application Instructions
