The Director of Assessment and Curriculum is a member of the Academic Leadership Team ( ALT ) led by the Vice President of Academic Affairs. This position will provide support and guidance to the ALT regarding curricular initiatives; course/program design, development, approval, review and evaluation; student learning outcomes ( SLO ) assessment strategies; transfer and articulation agreements; developmental education implementation; experiential education opportunities; course and program methodological delivery; and professional development and training for instruction. Working closely with the Assessment Council and the Assessment Coordinator, this administrative position is responsible for assuring that the college student learning outcomes ( SLO ) assessment program is of the highest possible quality. In collaboration with the ALT , the Director guides and manages the continuous maintenance of curriculum as well as its transferability with other academic institutions. The Director manages and represents the college’s curriculum programs and assists in addressing programmatic issues that are responsive to SCC’s vision, the workforce, and the educational needs of the southeastern Iowa region.
This position is a full-time position (261 day contract) with an annual starting salary of $60,000.
Benefits include medical, dental & vision insurance, $50,000 life insurance, long-term disability, paid sick leave, paid spring and holiday breaks, 15 days vacation and participation in IPERS or TIAA retirement Plan.
The Director of Assessment and Curriculum will abide by the employment contract and relevant policies and guidelines of the Board of Trustees.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
The Director will collaborate with the VPAA , Deans, Department Chairs, and Faculty to develop processes that support the academic mission of the college including: appropriately assessing student learning outcomes at both course and program level; ensuring curricula at course and program levels meet appropriate internal and external standards, are regularly reviewed, and submitted to oversight agencies for approval as necessary; developing articulation and educational partnerships; and creating and refining a systematic developmental education program. This position supervises Library Staff.
Assessment The Director serves as the ALT liaison to the Assessment Council, and facilitates the acquisition of resources as needed to ensure assessment processes are implemented in alignment with the recommendations of the Council.
Curriculum/ STICS The Director serves on the Curriculum committee and, in partnership with the Registrar, implements curricular changes in the Iowa statewide curriculum system (currently STICS ). The Director serves as liaison to the Iowa Department of Education for curriculum matters. In collaboration with the ALT , faculty, and the Guided Pathways team, the Director will participate in the initiative to develop clear pathways and transfer majors to student completion.
Articulation and Transfer The Director annually reviews articulation agreements to determine which to retain, retire, or update, and collaborates with faculty, deans, and partner institutions to update or develop new agreements. The Director facilitates and tracks the timely and accurate communication of articulation information, and reviews agreements to ensure transfer guides are clear and align with SCC curricula.
Adjunct Liaison The Director will be the liaison and go-to individual for adjuncts. This position will evaluate online courses taught by adjuncts, and then will collaborate with the appropriate Dean on next steps. This position will develop an adjunct onboarding process, coordinate adjunct orientations, and work closely with the ICCOC Faculty Liaisons etc.
Typical Duties Develop assessment processes and procedures that establish an assessment system both in academic and non-academic areas of the college. Work with faculty and staff to establish and revise course and program descriptions, learning outcomes and assessments. Prepare annual goals and collaborate with the Director of Institutional Research to conduct a variety of quantitative and qualitative SLO assessment mechanisms to support college-wide assessment. Present important developments in assessment throughout higher education through a variety of channels, including the college website, to faculty and staff. Collaborate with instructional and non-instructional managers in planning developing, maintaining and conducting effective assessment activities. Evaluate the application of SLO assessment in classrooms and other college areas as a means of supporting the revision of assessment practices. Provide coaching and advising of faculty and staff in the documentation of learning accomplishments. Ensure continued collection of SLO data and annual review of standardized rubrics. Serve on assigned committees as either a chair or member, complying with reporting deadlines, implementing approved strategies, scripting and posting proceedings and/or ensuring proceedings are completed and posted in a timely manner as needed. Participate in Academic Program Review ( APR ) meetings and ensure process and outcomes records are maintained and accessible. Assist in preparing assessment and curriculum-related agenda items presented to the Curriculum Committee, Assessment Council, Quality Team, President’s Cabinet, and other meetings as necessary. Serve as a liaison between the Academic Affairs office and academic departments regarding articulation, such as transfer equivalence of courses, programs, degrees and certificates, and advising. Perform the role of Course Equivalency specialist ad represent the college or program in the following internal and external procedural committees: Curriculum Committee, statewide Articulation Task Force and Transfer Major meetings, Iowa Curriculum Management System meetings (currently STICS ), and other meetings as necessary. Ensure that the college courses and related curriculum comply with college procedures and state and HLC regulations. Includes monitoring, reviewing, and archiving data in the college course bank, course syllabi, course files, course tracking, and archiving. Provide recommendations for modifications to the curriculum as appropriate as well as best practices in statewide articulation and transfer. Develop and manage the processing of curriculum changes via the State STICS curriculum system. Oversee the acquisition of curriculum changes from the Iowa Department of Education and the Higher Learning Commission. Train and create appropriate documentation for staff on proper procedures and policies related to curriculum development and articulation. In concert with the SCC Curriculum Committee, develop, implement, and create policies and procedures for curriculum-related programmatic matters: Serve as staff support and resource to the committee. Assist faculty and advisors in the review of articulation issues. Collaborate with Iowa state universities and community colleges to identify courses that are candidates for the Common Course Numbering system. Attend HLC and other conferences to maintain and advance knowledge of policies and procedures related to assessment and curriculum. In cooperation with faculty, Deans, the Disability Coordinator, the Libraries, and the SCC bookstore, interact with publishers to procure accessible texts and courseware for adjuncts to enhance the quality of course content and delivery. Supervise the Library staff. Required Qualifications
Required Master’s degree (completed or in-progress) in Adult Learning, Curriculum and Instruction, Education, Educational Administration, or related field. Three (3) years’ higher education teaching experience or equivalent, and/or demonstrated success in managing assessment, online teaching, and academic programing. Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum development, evaluation of curricula, assessment strategies, and deployment of instructional resources to support teaching and learning. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others, lead projects, and engage colleagues in innovation. Demonstrated commitment to the comprehensive community college philosophy. Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student and administrative data. Ability to use technology and computer software applications to perform work duties: Ability to use Microsoft Office programs; Ability to learn and develop competency in SCC’s administrative software Ability to integrate a wide range of instructional technology applications; and Familiarity with various learning management systems Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Doctorate in related field and five (5) years’ experience teaching at a college/university level, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Two (2) years’ experience supporting instructors in designing curricula, including incorporating technologies in classroom-based, online or blended learning environments. Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, including competency-based instructional models. Experience working in a community college setting. Physical Demands The Director of Assessment and Curriculum will be assigned to the West Burlington Campus and must have the ability and mobility to work from other locations when assigned, and to regularly visit other areas throughout the college district and state. Must be able to work on a basis of “available as work demands” in addition to a fixed schedule, which may include evenings and weekends. In addition, the individual in this position will actively promote a positive image for the college district.
