Associate General Counsel

Our client is a well-known and extremely fast-growing fashion e-commerce retailer. They are seeking an Associate General Counsel to partner with their existing GC on a wide variety of legal and compliance matters affecting all areas of the company, especially employment/HR, copyright/trademark, and contracts. In addition, this role will serve as a leader in the business’s commercial partnerships, which consist largely of technology contracts. The ideal candidate will have experience serving either as the Head of Legal at a small, high-growth company or as the right-hand to the General Counsel for a larger business.
This is an in-office position reporting to our client’s headquarters in Beverly Hills 5 days a week.
Responsibilities:
Serve as the right-hand to the General Counsel and assist in handling legal tasks involving the company’s e-commerce business, particularly those related to employment/HR, copyright/trademark matters, and a high volume of contracts. Advise on matters related to data privacy and intellectual property, explaining how these issues affect commercial transactions and the overall business. Draft, review, negotiate, and disseminate standardized corporate documents, agreements, and policies in support of scaling infrastructure and operations. Provide practical legal advice and support to the leadership team and functional leaders. Identify, negotiate, and manage external resources (i.e., contractors, consultants, external counsel) as needed to respond to inquiries, claims, and potential litigation. Assist the HR team in evaluating complex employment matters and in the review of employee files, accommodation requests, and unprotected leave requests. Serve as a resource for reviewing and editing internal and external messaging related to employment issues, licensing, trademark, and across the legal spectrum. Serve as liaison and point person for external legal resources as needed. Maintain professional certification and licensure by participating in ongoing training and development in the legal profession. Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree, required. J.D. degree from a top-tier accredited law school, required. 8-12+ years of relevant legal experience, ideally combining several years at a large law firm with at least 2 years in-house at a small to medium-sized high-growth company. Fashion, consumer packaged goods, or similar industry exposure a plus, but not required. Active membership in a United States state bar, or otherwise qualified to be a registered in-house counsel under California’s multi-jurisdictional practice program. Heavy experience in both HR/employment and copyright/trademark law. Technology contract experience, a big plus. Very comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to drop everything and focus on a single deal when important contracts or issues arise. True generalist, with the ability to draft well-structured, complete, and concise correspondence and documents. Experience serving as the Head of Legal at a small company or the right-hand to the Head of Legal for a medium-sized business. Technology proficient, with exposure to contract management systems like Ironclad. Deep knowledge of specific contract provisions as they apply in commercial contexts including indemnification provisions and limitations of liability. Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills. Compensation:
Targeting a base salary of $275k + bonus
