Trevor Day School is seeking an experienced and dynamic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to oversee the financial operations of the school and support its mission of providing an exceptional education to students from three years old to grade 12. The CFO will play a pivotal role in shaping the institution’s financial strategy, supporting its strategic growth, and ensuring its long-term financial sustainability.
This is an exciting opportunity for a strategic financial leader to join an innovative educational institution. The CFO will work closely with the Head of School, Board of Trustees, and senior leadership team to set and execute financial policies, long-term planning, and budgeting strategies. The CFO will also be responsible for oversight of the Finance Office personnel.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership: Lead the financial operations of the school, providing oversight of all financial functions including accounting, budgeting, financial planning, and reporting. Annual Budget: Oversee the development and management of the annual budget, ensuring alignment with the school’s objectives and fiscal responsibility. Reporting & Analysis: Produce accurate and timely financial reports for the full Board of Trustees, senior leadership, and external stakeholders. Financial Modeling: Produce and present frameworks that help the Board of Trustees and senior leadership team make data-driven decisions across all aspects of the school’s operations. Investment, Liability & Risk Management: In coordination with relevant consultants and banks, oversee management of the school’s operating cash, endowment, investment portfolios, and related risk management strategies, as well as compliance with its bond. Ensure financial policies are adhered to and that the school’s resources are managed prudently. Financial Systems & Processes: Evaluate and improve internal controls, financial systems, and processes to ensure both maximum efficiency and compliance with all pertinent regulations and standards; oversee annual audit process. Capital Projects: Oversee the financing of major capital projects, as well as appropriate planning for ongoing maintenance of both campuses and one residential (Head of School) apartment, in coordination with the Executive Director of Operations. Supervision & Team Development: Supervise, lead, and mentor the finance and accounting teams, as well as the Human Resources office. Cultivate a culture of collaboration, accountability, and excellence within the department. Board of Trustee Committees: Act as liaison to and work with the Board’s Budget & Finance, Investment, Audit, and Strategic Initiatives committees, as relevant. Qualifications
10+ years of experience in financial management, preferably in a non-profit or educational setting. Advanced degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related field. CPA or CFA designation preferred. Strong understanding of nonprofit financial practices, including endowment management, fund accounting, and compliance with applicable regulations. Proven experience in financial strategy, budgeting, and long-term planning. Ability to use technology to create efficiencies within the operations of the finance office team, as well as larger school operations. Ability to collaborate across multiple departments, including Development, Admissions, Academic Divisions, Operations, and others, appropriately balancing efficiency and investment in the highest quality programs. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders. Strong leadership skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. A passion for education and a commitment to supporting the mission of Trevor Day School. The full-time salary range for this position is $225,000–$350,000. When extending an offer for employment, Trevor Day School bases the salary upon several factors that include (but are not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education, training, key skills, and peer salary equity.
