Job Description: The College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program at Boston University expects to hire several full-time Lecturers in Writing to begin in July 2025. Responsibilities include teaching three classes per semester—theme-based first-year writing seminars and/or classes for multilingual writers—and participating in program service and professional development activities. The initial term of appointment is two years, with the possibility of renewal and promotion. The 2024 starting salary is $72,000 (2025 salary under negotiation). Required Skills: Successful candidates will have the equivalent of at least one full-time year of experience teaching writing; will be able to expand the topical range of our theme-based first-year classes; will be flexible in the range of course levels they are prepared to teach; and will have experience in at least one of the following areas: linguistic justice, critical language awareness, World Englishes, writing with generative AI, or writing in the disciplines, especially the natural or social sciences. Successful candidates will also have a demonstrable commitment to inclusive pedagogy—including teaching writing in ways that equitably serve BU’s many multilingual students and in keeping with Writing Program values and the College’s and University’s social justice priorities. One or more of these positions will be dedicated primarily to teaching courses for students for whom English is a second or other language. Applicants who wish to be considered for the multilingual writing position should make their experience with and advocacy for multilingual writers clear; successful applicants for this position will also be familiar with current scholarship in second language writing, intercultural rhetoric, and/or other related fields. The Writing Program is an independent instructional unit with more than fifty full-time unionized Lecturers. We offer a two-semester sequence of theme-based writing seminars through which most BU undergraduates satisfy their writing requirements (17-18 students each), and we prepare international undergraduate students for writing in their college classes through an additional two-course sequence for multilingual writers (15 students each).
