Aon is looking to appoint a new Global Chief Litigation Counsel to oversee the prosecution and defense of litigation brought by or against the company anywhere in the world and with respect to any of their four business lines: Commercial Risk, Health Insurance, Wealth Management and Reinsurance. This person must be a business-minded and collaborative lawyer with deep formal dispute resolution and litigation experience, as they will lead all aspects of Aon’s litigation docket and dispute resolution portfolio.
Following organizational changes, Aon has created this new Chief Litigation Counsel position. Reporting to the Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Company Secretary (General Counsel), the Chief Litigation Counsel will have the autonomy to set and drive company-wide strategy for litigation and dispute resolution and work closely with internal team members across compliance and regulatory to proactively manage risk and limit undue legal exposure. This individual must be successful at navigating the global matrixed environment, drive transformation and innovation, and promote the use of data analytics and technology. This role can be based from Chicago, New York, or London.
What the day will look like:
- Partner with and efficiently manage outside counsel and other legal service providers.
- Oversee dispute resolution governance requirements and work with the senior management team and business leaders to identify related institutional compliance priorities, implement and monitor compliance-related policies and procedures and monitor the effectiveness of the compliance program including appropriate compliance training and education programs that align with business strategy and priorities.
- Advise key partners of potential regulatory changes and court decisions that may impact Aon and if required implement mitigation strategies.
- Maintain close working relationships with the company’s insurance providers and collaborate with other company partners in designing optimal insurance programs.
- Work closely with business units and law department colleagues to leverage findings to strengthen controls and implement enhancements to the company’s operations and processes where appropriate.
- Partner with corporate legal and controllership colleagues to ensure that litigation related matters are appropriately addressed in SEC and Irish corporate filings.
- Provide strategic leadership in the management of legal professionals, including establishing performance objectives, providing appropriate training, and coaching to ensure direct reports and other team members deliver successfully against the organization's requirements.
- Serve as a senior leader on the global law and compliance leadership team with active involvement in all decision making related to strategic planning and execution of the function’s goals and objectives.
Skills and experience that will lead to success:
- 15-20 years of relevant litigation experience, including a combination of top-tier firm training, government and/or in-house roles of increasing responsibility with senior management experience.
- Prior experience leading a significant, global litigation docket for a multinational company is required. Experience managing litigation for a financial services institution is preferred.
- Experience navigating governance and regulatory issues financial services firms encounter, and working closely with international, federal, or state regulators or enforcement agencies, including SEC and FINRA is a plus.
- Experience leading a strong team of litigation lawyers and professionals, ideally at a global company of scale, as well as managing outside counsel in a cost-effective and efficient manner.
