Art Director

Paperless Post, New York, NY, United States

Paperless Post is seeking a talented Art Director to join our dynamic brand team. Our ideal candidate will bring a passion for brand storytelling in digital channels, and will help guide our brand's visual evolution.

As a key member of a small team, the Art Director is someone who approaches their work with a high taste level, enthusiasm for concepting and problem-solving, and strategic thinking. They have a discerning eye for both broad concepts and small details, and can execute on day-to-day management and creation of deliverables. In collaboration with the Design Director, they will guide the Junior Designer and Mid-level Graphic Designer and work with other teams to create elevated, engaging, and cohesive visual brand experiences across multiple channels, including: our website, emails, social content, blog editorial content, and digital ads.

What you'll do here:

  • Work with the Design Director and marketing team (designers, copywriters, marketers, and technologists) to concept new and creative ways to engage and communicate with our users, proactively bringing independent concepts and ideas to brainstorms with clear vision on how to execute
  • Independently generate ideas and work with the Design Director to evolve the visual identity of the Paperless Post brand system to feel more elevated and modern, differentiating tone for our different categories and/or offerings (Wedding, Pro, how to show Product and UX, etc).
  • Train and guide senior, mid-level, and junior designers to create high-quality work with focus on efficiency and beautiful, unexpected design solutions.
  • Design and lead other designers to create digital materials that are unique, clear in their messages, and that reinforce the brand as a leader in design. Examples of deliverables that often group together as holistic campaigns: creative concepting and design exploration on everything from email layouts to in-house photo shoots, original creative for blog editorial content, collateral and assets for press and partner launches, and realizing the potential of our marketing creative (email, social, advertising, etc.).
  • Concept and lead partnership launches, delegating sub-tasks to team
  • Confidently present design work to senior leadership and/or external-facing partners
  • Lead in-house photo shoots, organizing concept and creative buy-in from stakeholders
  • Mentor the junior and/or mid-level designers, touching on everything from technical teaching to stylistic and aesthetic guidance, with the goal of the designer being able to stand alone in lower-level tasks. Mentor the senior designer in higher-level skills such as design presentation and rationale, communication, and finessing of aesthetic tone.
  • Initiate collaboration with Product and Content teams as we refine existing Marketing materials (Native support, for example) and roll out new work (Pro, Homepage)
  • Contribute to concept and delegate lower-level execution for multi-channel brand campaigns
  • Act as a stand-in, able to explain, present, or defend work, and lead the team in execution/approvals, in the absence of the Design Director.
About you:
  • 7+ years experience working in branding, web experience required.
  • 1-2+ years experience supervising (formally or informally) junior designers
  • A well-developed, sophisticated, and aesthetically beautiful visual style. A strong portfolio with examples of brand storytelling and cross-channel marketing campaigns, featuring projects that actually shipped, with a presence of nationally recognized brands. Portfolio must include examples of animation.
  • Expert in sophisticated typography and dynamic layouts, ranging in tone from technical (Product features) to elegant (wedding) to avant garde (experimental partnerships)
  • Experience working on marketing initiatives that tell a cohesive brand design story.
  • An energetic, positive, and collaborative work ethic.
  • Self-sufficient in organization and schedule/time management
  • Total fluency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Mid-level to advanced skills in After Effects animation
  • Experience working with Product Teams is highly desirable
  • Experience in-house or at agencies whose aesthetic is well-regarded as a design leader is highly desirable
