Quality Control Trainee

The Quality Control Trainee is responsible for assisting with and/or handling of all facets of the Quality Improvement Program and Statistical Quality Process implementation, to include becoming a certified log grader, and certified lumber grader, maintain quality readings and documentation, chip analysis, caliper measurements to 0.001, become familiar with lumber grades, and perform maximum Quality improvement efforts with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities will include, but not limited to the following:

  • Responsible for assisting with and/or handling of all facets of the Quality Improvement Program and Statistical Quality Process implementation, to include becoming a certified log grader, and certified lumber grader, maintain quality readings and documentation, chip analysis, caliper measurements to 0.001, become familiar with lumber grades, and perform maximum Quality improvement efforts with minimal supervision.
  • Working relationships inside and outside the organization. Communicates with management, sale organization and customers when questions arise concerning the quality of the lumber.
  • Perform daily size checks of all machine centers for analysis.
  • Perform weekly machine center efficiencies for analysis.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of high school or equivalent education
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be approachable and possess good people skills
  • Must have good communication skills (ability to communicate with mill personnel in a helpful and constructive manner.)
  • Must be customer focused and unwilling to compromise on quality
  • Must be willing to work in all weather conditions and standing for long periods of time
  • Must have knowledge of computer skills or willing to learn within 30 days (spreadsheets, graphs, word processing.
  • Must be a Certified Shed Lumber Grader and willing to learn sawmill techniques or have sawmill experience and be willing to become a Certified Shed Lumber Grader
  • Must understand the statistical process. College statistical courses a plus.
  • Must have a desire to learn new skills and a sense of urgency to implement those skills safely within a scheduled timeframe.
After completing the required 90 day probation period, the successful candidate will enter into a maximum of three (3) years training program, which must be completed either in the learning center or off-site. Several training modules are part of the program.

Math Fundamentals - from basic numbers to ratio/proportion/percent and applied math. A passing grade of "B" or better must be accomplished to remain in the training program. Must be completed within the first 6 months of training program.
  1. SPC - Must complete WF's in-house Statistical Process Control course.
  2. Certified Log Grader - Must be certified within first 6 months of training program.
  3. Certified Lumber Grader - Must be certified within first 6 months of training program.
