The Director of Philanthropy reports to the Executive Director and serves on the organization's Leadership Team, which supports the Executive Director in visioning and executing the overall trajectory of the organization.

The Director of Philanthropy will play a key leadership role in advancing the mission of the organization through strategic collaboration with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, staff, volunteers, and program constituents to create, implement, and manage multi-year fund development and communications plans designed to support Las Trampas' near and long-term goals. The Director of Philanthropy reports to the Executive Director and serves on the organization's Leadership Team, which supports the Executive Director in visioning and executing the overall trajectory of the organization.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Planning - Lead development and communications strategy and operations. Develop and implement a comprehensive, multi-year major gifts, planned giving, appeals, events, and institutional giving strategic plan to increase the number of donors and donor retention, deepen donor engagement, grow unrestricted contributed income, improve awareness of Las Trampas' mission and brand, and strengthen Las Trampas' fund development infrastructure. Plan and coordinate all logistics associated with bi-annual fundraising gala and smaller fundraising events.
- Staff Management - Recruit, direct, and supervise development support staff (one full-time Development Manager), volunteers, and consultants to develop and align appropriate fundraising strategies, tactics, and messaging.
- Leadership - Function as an organizational leader and highly collaborative member of the Leadership Team, working closely with the Executive Director and Program Directors to articulate program goals and impact to donors and funders and to create meaningful engagement opportunities.
- Donor Engagement - Develop and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive donor stewardship program that includes regular communication, events, visits, and other tactics to build and deepen relationships and inspire frequent and larger gifts. Manage a portfolio of major donors including multi-year major gifts, planned giving, foundation and corporate giving, and support members of the Board and the Executive Director in managing portfolios.
- Board Development - Work in close partnership with the Executive Director, Board Chair, and Board members to build the Board's capacity in major donor engagement, solicitation, and stewardship. Serve as primary staff to the Board's External Affairs Committee and all subcommittees. Support with Board and Committee recruitment.
- Financial Accountability - In partnership with the Director of Business Services, develop and oversee the department budget including fundraising activity plans that maximize participation and/or contributions and minimize expenses.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience.
- Successful track record of setting and meeting ambitious and realistic fundraising goals.
- Four (4) years verifiable success in managing fundraising programs such as direct mail, digital fundraising, major gifts, (including "making the ask" and "closing"), institutional fundraising, special events, and planned giving.
- Proven success engaging board members and high-level volunteers in major gifts fundraising.
- Experience in public relations, communications, marketing, and digital media for non-profits.
- Passion for supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to lead full lives.
- Experience with capital fundraising including capital campaigns is preferred.
- A minimum of one (1) year of supervisory experience (four or more years' experience preferred).
- Extensive experience with computer software systems including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), donor database software (Donor Perfect), internet, and website software.
- Highly ethical and professional standards.
- Strong leadership skills including problem-solving, critical thinking, vision, personal and group accountability, coaching, mentoring, and inspiring others to excel.
- Superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Personal vehicle to be used for company business, current and valid California driver's license (or ability to switch license from another state), and a driving record that meets agency standards for driving on company business.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle according to California laws and regulations
- Ability to be in a seated position for periods up to 2 hours
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
- Visual acuity required for the use of computers and reading materials
