Job Description
Position Description Tax managers report directly to the VP of tax and have advanced knowledge and experience in tax compliance. They oversee the daily activities of the tax team, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of tax filings and investor reporting, while also driving strategic initiatives to achieve company goals. Job Responsibilities Manage the review process of federal, state, and local tax returns for April’s property partnerships on a timely basis Manage the tax team and oversee day-to-day operations Proactively coordinate and communicate with the accounting team, project management companies, and tax accounting firms to manage the flow of information between parties and identify any potential bottlenecks in the tax return delivery process Provide clear communication of review comments and observations to applicable third-party tax accounting firms Escalate significant issues to executive leadership promptly, providing a point of view on how to address Review partnership and corporate legal documents as needed to ensure accurate preparation of tax returns in line with the agreements Work with other teams in the organization to ensure that all transactions are correctly recorded and timely and anticipate applicable tax impact Manage the delivery of investor reporting and respond to ad hoc tax questions posed by BREIT and other investors Lead the internalization of tax returns from external consultants and manage the use of Center of Excellence resources Review calculations and returns of federal and state taxable income for certain upper-tier partnership, corporate, and disregarded entities prepared by the team Oversee the mailing and electronic filing of tax returns Review monthly tax estimates impacting BREIT, including tax gain/loss calculations Develop and implement tax accounting policies and procedures Conduct research as necessary to determine compliance with tax laws; read periodicals to maintain knowledge about changing tax laws, planning opportunities, and filing requirements Coordinate correspondence relating to federal and state tax notices Plan and execute process optimization and restructuring initiatives Drive special projects and ad hoc reporting and analyses as necessary Mentor staff and senior accountants and assist in their professional development Determine staffing and training needs and conduct performance reviews Demonstrate a high attention to detail and willingness to learn Qualifications Required: Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field Minimum of 6 years’ experience in a public accounting firm or tax department Advanced knowledge of partnership and corporate federal and state taxation People management experience, supervising and leading others Exercises judgment in managing team dynamics and making operational decisions Skilled in managing multiple tasks and deadlines, ensuring timely completion of projects Detail oriented and possess strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment Can collaborate across functional areas and work with various teams Proficiency with spreadsheets and tax preparation software Preferred: Advanced tax degree and/or CPA certification Knowledge of REIT and/or low-income housing taxation Experience with FAS2000
