Job Title : Senior Chemist
General Description : The Senior Chemist is responsible for developing and executing synthetic routes for the synthesis of target molecules, focusing on developing an oxidation platform to convert coal-derived and petroleum-derived feedstocks to high-value specialty chemicals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Develop and execute synthetic routes for the synthesis of target molecules, focusing on efficient, scalable, and sustainable methodologies. Perform synthesis, purification, and characterization of organic compounds. Duties will be varied but may include (1) microreactor (small-scale pilot) experimentation including data processing and interpretation, (2) autoclave-based experimentation, (3) catalyst design, (4) process optimization, and (5) general innovation. Ideal candidates will be self-motivated with a demonstrated record of research aptitude. Optimize reaction conditions, troubleshoot challenges, and improve yields and selectivity for scale-up. Collaborate closely with team members to support project goals. Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments and results in laboratory notebooks and digital platforms. Review literature; evaluate and analyze competitors’ technologies. Participate in group discussions; generate ideas for new catalysts/adsorbents, catalytic processes, and separation technologies. Present findings, data analysis, and project updates in team meetings. Provide chemistry expertise to support health, safety, environmental, sustainability and regulatory compliance. Participate in all team safety activities and conduct all work with a high degree of attention to safety. Present technical results to inside customers (SINOPEC and UOP), and outside conferences. Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Proven experience in synthesis of small molecules and/or polymers with isolation and purification process, with a strong understanding of reaction mechanisms and synthesis strategies. Familiar with material characterization with analytical tools such as GC, GC-MS, HPLC, HPLC-MS, and NMR. Demonstrated ability to work independently with a strong focus on delivering results and identifying alternative solutions when challenges arise. Demonstrated strong analytical skills in solving problems. Excellent written and verbal communication skills to ensure all aspects of projects are clearly understood and well documented. Good interpersonal skills and demonstration of good teamwork ability. Ability to travel up to 10% on an annual basis.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Experience in production of chemicals by oxidation reactions with air or molecular oxygen such as in the cumene process (phenol and acetone are made from benzene and propylene) or in the propylene oxide/styrene monomer (POSM) process (ethylbenzene is oxidized to ethylbenzene hydroperoxide, an epoxidizing agent). A strong understanding of the reaction kinetics and mechanism of autooxidation and catalytic oxidation with air, oxygen, and hydrogen peroxide. Extensive knowledge and practical experience in the use and management of organic peroxides.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, LICENSES and EXPERIENCE: Ph.D. or M.S. in Chemistry or chemical engineering or related field; candidates with B.S. and significant industry experience may be considered. Commercialization of new products would be a plus. Minimum 2 years post-graduation working experience in chemical or petrochemical research. Must be legally eligible to work in the United States.
