About the job
Twilio is looking for a Vice President of Engineering for our Billing Platform to be a key transformative leader in R&D. This is an incredible opportunity for a world-class software executive to have an enormous impact at a high growth company solving challenging cross-departmental and technology problems with the support and visibility of Twilio’s Executive team. The main deliverable for this hire will be to build and deliver a Billing Platform at scale that meets the complicated needs of multiple product lines and compliance at Twilio (SaaS, UCaaS, PaaS, etc). In order to do so, this hire must work across R&D, finance, sales operations, and executive leadership to forge partnerships and alignment. This role will partner directly with the VP of Product for Billing to lead Billing Platform and will involve directly managing a team of senior technical leaders responsible for growing to a global organization of 150 people from 75 today.

Responsibilities
As a VP of Engineering, Billing Platform, you will:

  1. Rapidly scale a world-class R&D organization, through the recruitment and development of top engineering talent.
  2. Implement effective strategies and work with Twilio’s global multi-functional talent team to attract, develop, mentor, and retain highly skilled employees from diverse backgrounds that we need to support our growth and success.
  3. Partner with the VP of Product to lead the strategy and vision for Billing Platform and drive the tactical execution of the product lifecycle/engineering schedule (operations, release, development, QA and support) for the products in Billing Platform.
  4. Foster a generative culture that is performance-oriented, lean, cooperative, adaptive, and innovative.
  5. Drive multi-year platform re-architecture working with product management, engineering, and architects to improve scalability and quality for our Billing Platform.
  6. Build a resilient engineering organization that is capable of sustaining organizational churn and system failure.
  7. Effectively communicate and influence across the organization including the Executive Leadership.
  8. Drive cascading quarterly goals to support annual company and organizational goals.
  9. Be accountable for product quality, security, and performance.
  10. Balance the creation of new functionality for current and future customer needs, infrastructure management and the elimination of technical debt.
  11. Support process for incident management including quality control of RCAs.
  12. Participate and support a sense of psychological safety of the department.
  13. Act as a leader and advocate for Twilio’s anti-racist and inclusive identity as an organization.
  14. Measure and improve the happiness of Engineering with the belief that happy organizations deliver products that make their customers happy.

Qualifications

Required:
We are looking for a leader who lives Twilio Magic and also are/have:

  1. 10 years of experience as a software engineering leader.
  2. Experience with billing systems development or a related area like finance, payments, or sales.
  3. Track record of designing and building large-scale, cloud-based, highly available software platforms in a high growth environment.
  4. Expert understanding of software development processes and lifecycle.
  5. High degree of empathy and emotional intelligence.
  6. Excellent technical skills paired with attention to detail and an ability to effectively influence inside and outside of hierarchy.
  7. Extensive engineering expertise in the areas of architecture, design and development.
  8. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills coupled with strong attention to detail.
  9. Sound judgment and determination to turn your ideas into reality with a bias to action.
  10. Excellent verbal and written communicator.
  11. Proven change and transformation leadership.
  12. Demonstrated ability to run world class operations of large scale software systems.
  13. Experience continually assessing, refining, maturing, implementing, and upholding of engineering standards and best practices.
  14. Experience leading at a VP level, preferably including global teams of 100 people.
  15. Experience leading significant budgets, vendors, and contract relationships.

Location
This position will be remote or in a Twilio office if located near one, ideally for candidates located in the United States.

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location within the state.
