This position is responsible for ensuring that all reusable surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment are properly decontaminated, inspected, assembled, packaged, sterilized, stored, inventoried, and appropriately tracked in accordance with the established departmental and/or hospital policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
Ensures processing and assembly of medical supplies, equipment, and instrumentation in accordance with established productivity measures of at least a cumulative average of 80% over a monitored 8-hour period and up to a 40-hour work week.
Operates automated washers, cart washers, ultrasonic washers, automated endoscope reprocessors, and sterilizers safely and efficiently, following manufacturers' instructions and department policies.
Transports soiled medical instrumentation/devices according to departmental and/or hospital protocol and established guidelines.
Sorts soiled items for decontamination and cleaning for safe handling by other staff members for reprocessing.
Inspects instrumentation and equipment for cleanliness, defects, and proper working conditions before packaging 100% of the time.
Maintains an accuracy percentage of complete instrument trays processed 100% of the time.
Ensures all associated documentation is complete and initialed 100% of the time.
Proficient in using the SPM Instrument Tracking System for all work assignments.
Ensures all items to be High Level Disinfected/Sterilized (HLD/S) are subjected to the correct disinfectant/sterilization modality under appropriate parameters, validated with proper documentation.
Distributes all HLD/S items in a manner that maintains their HLD/S integrity and documents as necessary per departmental and/or hospital protocol.
Ensures all patient-specific case cart needs are met, providing the correct items with complete sets whenever possible.
Ensures consistent and effective communication flow.
Communicates all concerns regarding workflow, employee issues, equipment problems, safety concerns, and opportunities for service improvements.
Attends and engages in departmental staff meetings and in-services.
Ensures compliance and demonstrates knowledge of all mandated safety programs.
Follows and enforces appropriate dress codes 100% of the time.
Adheres to internal and external emergency plans 100% of the time.
Education Requirement
High School Diploma / GED Required
Work Experience
Experience with scope reprocessing required for scope processing roles.
At least two (2) years in a central supply or O.R. processing area preferred.
Licenses, Certifications, and Registrations
Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) from Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution or Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) upon hire required.
Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) from Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution upon hire required.
Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) mandatory.
Level 3 Covid required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Basic computer literacy needed.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to effectively interact with all levels of hospital personnel.
Must be self-motivated and able to perform varied tasks with minimal supervision.
