Summary:
The phlebotomist obtains blood specimens from patients by the procedure of venipuncture. The phlebotomist is responsible for collecting specimens for routine, times and Stat collections. Exemplifies the Rush mission, vision and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.

Required Job Qualifications:
High School graduate
0-2 years' experience in a Hospital Laboratory
Preferred Job Qualifications:
National Phlebotomy or equivalent certification
Physical Demands:
Able to work in past pace, often stressful, computerized environment.
Able to lift 15 lbs. and perform repetitive motions.
Works in laboratory with exposure to potentially infectious materials.
Competencies:
Knowledge of the venipuncture procedure; good interpersonal and communication skills
Responsibilities:
Collects all blood specimens in a timely manner. Labeling all tubes correctly.
Collects specimens from the Nursing Unit collection bins.
Performs HIS and LIS registration and order entry correctly. Double checks orders in computer vs. requisition to avoid mistakes and order omissions.
Keeps work area, phlebotomy cart, and personal appearance, neat, clean and organized.
Stocks supplies at the appropriate level. Replenishes supplies at the end of the shift.
Participates willingly when asked to participate in special projects or events, for example health screenings.
