Job Overview:
The Phlebotomist will perform blood collection requiring knowledge of clinical science to understand various tests and specimen requirements. This role involves executing venipuncture, preparing patients for blood drawing, and collecting specimens for laboratory testing, including blood cultures and compatibility samples. Responsibilities include accessioning and receiving samples into the laboratory information system for in-house testing or sending them to reference laboratories.
The Phlebotomist will instruct patients on the proper collection of 24-hour urine and other samples collected at home, prepare collection materials, and measure and record 24-hour urine volumes. They will transport specimens to the laboratory, including those requiring special handling, and look up laboratory order numbers and patient information for outpatient drawings.
This role requires utilizing a numbering system to check patients into the laboratory, answering phones, and directing calls to other sections. Establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal skills and good customer relations with patients and families is essential. General clerical and administrative support for the area, as well as stocking and maintaining specialized supplies used in the drawing area, will also be part of the responsibilities. Experience Requirements:
- A minimum of one year of experience in phlebotomy
- Proven experience performing phlebotomy for blood cultures and compatibility samples.
- Familiarity with accessioning and receiving samples for in-house testing and sending out to reference laboratories..
- Experience instructing patients on proper specimen collection techniques, including 24-hour urine collection.
- Knowledge of preparing, measuring, and recording 24-hour urine volumes and transporting specimens
- Ability to look up laboratory order numbers and patient information for outpatient draws
- Experience using a numbering system for patient check-ins in a laboratory setting
- Strong verbal communication skills for answering phones and directing calls
- Experience providing general clerical and administrative support in a healthcare setting
- Ability to stock and maintain specialized supplies used in the drawing area

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry laboratory supplies and equipment, which may weigh up to 25 pounds or more
- Ability to stand for long periods while performing phlebotomy procedures
- Good hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills for accurate specimen collection and handling
- Capability to bend, reach, and maneuver in various positions to access patients and equipment
- Ability to move quickly and safely within a clinical environment.
Education Requirements:
- Certification as a Phlebotomist (e.g., ASCP, NHA).
- Copy of current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- Previous experience in a clinical or hospital laboratory environment.

- Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM or 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, alternating tours. Overtime on an as-needed basis.
