Job Description

Certified Phlebotomist

Reports to: Phlebotomy Supervisor Department: Lab

Classification: Full Time Hourly Effective Date: 5/13/19

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed. They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.

SUMMARY:

This Position is responsible for performing venipuncture, administering vaccines, and issuing urine specimen containers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Verifies patient by utilizing two or more identifiers.
  2. Prepares equipment to efficiently collect blood specimens.
  3. Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients as directed by physician and follows medical practice protocols related to safety, infection control, and confidentiality.
  4. Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection.
  5. Stores and distributes samples to designated departments.
  6. Conducts laboratory tests on specimens.
  7. Maintains daily tallies of collections performed and enters data into lab information system.
  8. Assists patients before, during, and after venipuncture. Gives instructions on urine collection procedures.
  9. Aids in the recovery of patients having adverse reactions.
  10. Cleans/sterilizes equipment, instruments, and work area following safety, cleanliness, and infection control procedures.
  11. Monitors storage temperatures and tracks expiration dates on refrigerated supplies.
  12. Inventories supplies and places orders to ensure adequate supplies for procedures.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Current Phlebotomist certification or registration through an accredited institution and/or agency.

Experience: Previous experience in phlebotomy or other related fields recommended.

Performance Requirements:

Knowledge:
  1. Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques.
  2. Knowledge of medical terminology.
  3. Familiarity of clinic protocols and policies.
  4. Knowledge of HIPAA
Skills:
  1. Skill in performing efficient and effective venipuncture.
  2. Skill in conducting cooperative interactions with patients and staff.
  3. Skills in prioritizing tasks and time management.
  4. Strong organizational skills.
Abilities:
  1. Ability to interpret and respond appropriately to instructions.
  2. Ability to coordinate eyehand movements to ensure patient comfort during venipuncture.
  3. Ability to build rapport with patients and co-workers.


Equipment Operated: Blood draw equipment including needles, syringes, tubes, bandages, and other appropriate supplies.

Work Environment: Performs duties in medical exam/procedure rooms. Exposure to communicable diseases, sharp instruments, bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals.

Physical Requirements: Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with a Phlebotomist such as standing six to eight hours per day, walking, bending, and reaching. Occasionally lifting up to 30 lbs. of supplies and equipment and helping with patient transport and transfer. Some stress when dealing with priorities and anxious patients.
