Job Summary

The Phlebotomist provides expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation.

Their ability to put patients at ease while obtaining sufficient samples with minimal discomfort across a wide demographic is critical to delivering high-quality care for patients and partners.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge samples, record maintenance data, and update patient information.
• Collect and store specimens following established procedures.
• Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture or other specimen collection processes to patients.
• Demonstrate proper techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Verify and understand all physician orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and prepare specimens (labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing) as required.
• Ensure 100% accuracy by checking all requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
• Package specimens for transport and store them at the required temperature.
• Follow procedures to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and wear appropriate PPE.
• Attend annual department training sessions.
• Answer phone inquiries and provide laboratory results when appropriate.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Proven experience in phlebotomy, including blood draws, venipunctures, and specimen handling.
• Proficiency in using straight and butterfly needles and handling various color-coded tubes.
• Familiarity with OSHA and DEP regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Experience in a healthcare or clinical laboratory setting.
