Duration (months): Minimum 1 week commitment between 7/6 and 8/1 OR Full Commitment 6/23-8/4

Position Summary

The mission of Primitive Pursuits is to steward the health of our community by fostering life-long relationships with the natural world through exceptional mentoring and nature education. We have been providing nature connection programming to people of all ages for over twenty years and are excited to continue our overnight summer camp at Arnot Forest.

The key role of the Overnight Camp Nurse is to oversee all emergency and medical related care for our overnight camp staff and campers from registration, arrival to departure. Prior to camp starting the Camp Nurse will stock the infirmary of all necessary supplies and review all camper health documents. Each week the Camp Nurse will intake and organize camper medical documents. Upon camper arrival the Camp Nurse will check in with each camper and parent to discuss any pertinent medications and/or medical information. Throughout the week the Camp Nurse will provide medications to campers and staff as per Department of Health standards, maintain the camp infirmary, treat minor injuries and be on-call while camp is in session. The Overnight Camp Nurse stays onsite at Arnot Forest for the entire duration of the camp season.

The Overnight Camp Nurse will ideally commit to the entire employment length, 6/23/25-8/4/2025 but we will consider applicants who can not commit to the entirety of the season (ex: 1,2,3 weeks)

There will be housing onsite provided in one of our cabins, which includes access to a kitchen and bathrooms. This position has the potential to receive staff discounts for our youth summer day and overnight camps. All meals while camp is in session are provided at no cost!


Required Qualifications

  • 21 years of age or older
  • Be a licensed Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physicians Assistant, Registered Nurse, or Licensed Practical Nurse and able to practice the profession in NYS. (have a valid NYS license)
  • Prior experience working with youth in some capacity (does not have to be in a medical capacity)
  • Flexible and able to adapt to different environments and schedules
  • Be on-call while campers are on site; Sunday-Friday
  • Must pass all required screenings for working at a NYS Summer Camp
  • Commit to working camp July 6-August 1
  • Must be able to live and stay onsite while camp is in session
  • Drivers license and transportation to camp locations on time
  • Be able to lift 25 pounds without accommodation
  • Be able to work on their feet for long periods of time (4+ hours) and run in emergency situations on uneven terrain
  • Experience treating minor injuries such as cuts, burns and scrapes
  • Ability to access injuries for future treatment
  • Act as the Emergency Responder in a medical emergency and determine the next steps in care
  • Ability to work flexible hours which include evenings, overnights and weekends, as appropriate

  • Responsible for adequate supervision of campers and ensuring an emotional, social, and physically safe environment in which campers and staff can thrive

  • Represent the high caliber of the organization when speaking to parents, staff and participants

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in helping people through mental health crisis and disorders
  • Experience in helping people with homesickness and/or separation anxiety
  • Youth Mental Health First Aid Certified

Responsibilities

  • Holds safety of campers as the first priority. Emphasizes personal safety and emotional well-being with campers, parents and other camp staff at all times.
  • Holds title of Health Director at Arnot Forest Camps for the NYS Department of Health. Reviews overnight camper lists each week and consults with Camp Director, Camp Kitchen Manger and camp staff as appropriate.
  • Organizes overnight camper medical paperwork prior to summer camps and communicates pertinent histories to appropriate staff.
  • Sets up and maintains the overnight camp infirmary in accordance with NYS Camp Guidelines.
  • Accepts all medications on arrival day from parents and turns over medications on pick up day
  • Embraces the value of camp life through positive role-modeling, helping kids and staff having a great time, and conveying positive experiences to parents and families in all communications.
  • Physically check all campers upon arrival for health, injuries, and head lice
  • Review camp health records as needed
  • Maintains and organizes all medical records of campers and staff on site
  • Maintain confidentiality of all camper and staff medical information, medications, diagnoses and injuries and only communicates it to appropriate staff/personnel
  • Dispenses medications at proper times.
  • Provides First Aid for minor injuries.
  • Maintains an ongoing medical log of all medications, injuries and infirmary visits
  • Acts as liaison with local doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies.
  • Communicates with parents as needed in response to campers health needs.
  • Accompanies sick/injured campers or staff to the hospital.
  • Presents as a caring adult who is available to support emotional and developmental needs of campers.
  • Participates in camp activities and events as appropriate
  • Other Duties as assigned
