Description

Operates a selection of heavy motorized equipment and performs a variety of other tasks as required.

An employee in this class may be responsible for the efficient and safe operation of equipment and that other assignments requiring the use of heavy motorized equipment are performed properly. Standard procedures are followed and work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation. This class differs from that of Motor Equipment Operator because of the higher degree of skill required in operating equipment, as well as the type of equipment operated, plus additional responsibilities associated with the different tasks involved, such as supervising other equipment operators, mechanics, maintenance workers or other subordinate workers.

Essential Job Functions

Performs pre-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment by checking of radiator water level, oil level, turn signals, lights, mirrors, and visual inspection of condition of tires and other items depending on the equipment;

Operates equipment such as: bucket truck, front-end loaders, aerial lifts, hoist truck, skid loader, hand and power saws, wood chippers, winches, blowers, stump grinders, etc.

Supervises crew(s) involved in assigned tasks and is responsible for correct completion of those tasks in addition to operating equipment;

When not operating motorized equipment, works as a laborer or semi-skilled laborer as assigned;

Services and maintains all of the equipment

May work with pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers;

Does related work as required

Equipment Used/Job Location:

Works outdoors in varying weather conditions;

Operates some of the following: combination back hoe, loaders, grader, trenchers, bucket truck as well as other equipment and equipment developed or advanced from future technology as required by the job;

Uses various hand tools and power tools (example: chain saws, etc.)

Minimum Requirements

High school graduation or GED plus some experience in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid Florida commercial driver's license "Class B" or higher. "N" tank endorsement will be required for Heavy Equipment Operators hauling liquid or liquid gas in a permanently mounted cargo tank rated at 119 gallons or more or a portable tank rated at 1,000 gallons or more.

Good knowledge of the operation of a variety of motorized equipment;

Good knowledge of traffic and safety rules and regulations and accident prevention practices;

Skill in the operation of automotive equipment under all types of weather conditions;

Basic knowledge of trees;

Ability to lift and drag heavy tree limbs and materials;

Ability to work at heights;

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions;

Ability to respond to back-up alarms, shouted responses, commands and warnings;

Ability to maintain equipment;

Ability to accept responsibility;

Physically able to perform duties.
