Job Summary

The Hanover Department of Public Works seeks qualified candidates for the position of Light or Heavy Equipment Operator. This is a full-time (40 hour/week) and benefits eligible position. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, operating equipment to construct, improve and maintain roads and drainage systems; helping grade and set up base for new street construction and building sites; operating trucks to haul materials, plow snow, and clear ice from streets and sidewalks; assisting with installation and maintenance of storm drain systems, and performing routine road maintenance. Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands/Work Environment: Duties typically involve standing, walking, crouching, bending, stooping, and lifting both light and heavy objects. High degree of dexterity needed to operate and maintain job-related tools and equipment. Use of safety and protective equipment frequently required. Work is typically performed outdoors, at times in extreme cold, heat, and inclement weather.

Major Job Duties

  • Operates heavy equipment in the maintenance and repair of town streets, including an excavator, loader, backhoe, dozer, dump truck, grader, chipper, and boom mower.
  • Operates snow plows and sanding equipment.
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools, including a chainsaw.
  • Installs drainage pipes and catch basins.
  • Removes tree hazards.
  • Builds forms; pours and finishes concrete; lays brick and block.
  • Assists in traffic control at work sites.
  • Patches potholes and utility cuts.
  • Sets and installs road and street signs.
  • Installs signs and holiday decorations.
  • Responds to customer service requests; completes work orders.
  • Performs pre- and post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections.
  • Maintains assigned equipment; changes oil and filters; changes spark plugs; removes and installs chains, blades, and bars.
  • Performs related duties.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a driver's license valid in the State of New Hampshire for the type(s) of vehicle or equipment operated.
Knowledge and Skills Required
  • Knowledge of the techniques, equipment, and supplies used in street and drainage system construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of established safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the town, including street names and locations.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment, tools and machinery, including an excavator, loader, bulldozer, backhoe, street sweeper, and dump truck.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
