Job Description
Summary: Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in daily landfill operations, inspecting loads, directing loads to designated areas, and operation of heavy construction equipment.
Supervision Received: Director of Public Works, Operations Manager, Solid & Liquid Waste Superintendent and Landfill Foreman
Supervision Exercised: None
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Essential Job Functions:
Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of landfill operations, maintenance, and use of heavy motor equipment in general construction and maintenance activities. Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations related to equipment operation. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation of heavy motor driven equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions. Skill in the operation of heavy motor driven equipment over rough, slippery, or unstable surfaces.
Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
Experience: Experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy equipment. Two years as Light Equipment Operator.
Necessary Special Requirement:
Position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and is subject to controlled substance requirements at all times when on duty.
Equipment Used in Job Performance: Dump trucks, front-end loaders, garbage trucks, compactors, scrapers, sand spreaders, blade, pumps, lawn mower, weed eater, computer, radio.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Essential Job Functions:
- Operates the following pieces of equipment: dump trucks, front-end loaders, rollers, sand spreaders, slinger truck, street sweepers, bulldozers, scrapers, trash compactors, air compressor, jackhammer, air driven compaction tools and composter.
- Operates a variety of other special and standard equipment as assigned.
- Services equipment and makes field adjustments and repairs.
- Assists with scale operations.
- Aware of daily worksite conditions and hazards.
- Performs manual labor incidental to the operation to which assigned and occasionally exercises supervision over other operators and laborers.
- Must be on call occasionally on weekends or after hours.
- Be physically present in attendance at the worksite.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
- Performs related work as required.
- The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion.
- Operate forklift and skid steer loaders.
- Substitute for sanitation truck drivers, operating side load and rear load sanitation trucks and roll-off trucks.
- Assist with snow removal.
