Who We Are
Utilities is a division of Facilities and Operations, made up of 135 dedicated employees responsible for providing utilities services for the university 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Services include campus-wide utilities purchasing, generation, and distribution, as well as metering and billing energy consumption for all university buildings. Distribution includes the operations and maintenance of 300 miles of underground utility systems from outdoor lighting and high voltage circuits to water mains to tunnel piping. The division also provides a wide range of engineering services primarily dedicated to energy management, the operations and maintenance of university facilities, and the utilities infrastructure.

Responsibilities*
* This position operates equipment including backhoes, excavators, vacuum trucks, skid steers, bulldozers, power shovels, road graders, cranes, camera trucks, dump trucks, loaders, piercing tools, forklifts, trenchers, vibratory plows, concrete buggies and boom trucks in order to construct, repair, and maintain underground utilities.
* Perform precision grading and operate power driven equipment around underground utilities including water, sewer, and storm mains, electrical systems in conduit and direct burial, live gas mains, high voltage duct banks, cathedral tile, steam lines, telecommunication cable, underground vaults, landscape root systems, irrigation lines, and in close proximity to buildings, equipment, co-workers, and the general public.
* Assist electricians in pulling cable, excavating, and burying electrical lines.
* Perform grading, excavation, backfilling, hauling, hoisting, and loading operations with power driven equipment.
* Install, operate, adjust, maintain, and remove various attachments, including blades, buckets, scoops and spreaders.
* Inspect, service, and perform minor repairs on heavy equipment, operated.
* Operates tractor and trailer combination and lowboys in transporting heavy equipment and materials.
* Coordinate the work of laborers or other helpers in such activities as the loading and unloading of equipment and materials, hand spreading of materials, pick and shovel work and disposal of refuse.
* Coordinate setup/teardown of barricades, fencing and pylons.
* Maintain records of materials and time expended in order to meet university and EHS requirements.
* Fill out and submit reports of equipment repairs as needed.
* Submit Miss Dig Tickets, verify that Miss Dig markings are clear or staked (Positive Response), perform Miss Dig Staking on various Utilities assets and systems.
Required Qualifications*
* Class A-CDL required.
* Combination and tanker endorsements required within 6 months after hire date.
* Must complete and pass associated physical, drug and/or alcohol testing.
* Knowledge of and experience using safety equipment, including but not limited to trench boxes and other similar worker safety systems in order to perform responsibilities in a safe manner.
* Demonstrated ability to effectively operate equipment in a competent and safe manner, often close to structures, people, utility systems, this includes but is not limited to digging holes and trenches that this position and others will perform work in.
* Knowledge and demonstrated competence using Geographic Imaging System (GIS).
