As a Senior Hardware/Platform Engineer, you will take a leading role in driving R&D efforts for the TrueNAS hardware platform. Your responsibilities include evaluating potential hardware platforms, researching emerging storage hardware trends, and performing design and qualification of new components and products. You will engage in prototyping, failure analysis, and provide support for field issues with existing TrueNAS platforms. You will also be involved in the New Product Introduction (NPI) process, collaborating closely with product management, supply chain, and software engineering teams.


This is an in-office role based out of our Maryville, TN office.


Base Pay Range

The base pay range of this position is $100,000 to $125,000 USD annually. Additional compensation through the Incentive Bonus Program is available for this position.

The final offer will consider various factors, such as location, education, and prior experience, to ensure a comprehensive and fair compensation assessment.

The Day-to-Day

  • Collaborate with vendors, product management, and storage software engineering to define scope and technical requirements for new and existing hardware projects.
  • Conduct qualification testing for new hardware, document test plans and results, and generate detailed reports for key stakeholders.
  • Analyze test data to identify trends, ensuring product quality and recommending corrective measures for defects or issues.
  • Develop and optimize automation frameworks for hardware qualification testing, driving continual process improvements.
  • Provide technical feedback on product design and architecture, ensuring compatibility between hardware and software to meet customer and product requirements.
  • Stay informed on new hardware components and updates, monitoring component lifecycle and assessing impacts on current products.
  • Communicate hardware-related updates, changes, and issues to product management and engineering, following the ECN/PCN and NPI processes.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of hardware problems and recommend solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • Troubleshoot customer issues and formulate reproduction scenarios, coordinating those efforts with upstream hardware vendors to determine root cause / issue mitigation.
  • Support the hardware aspects of New Product Introduction (NPI) and ensure timely updates to cross-functional teams.

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, a related discipline, or significant professional experience is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in hardware engineering, with expertise in enterprise-grade server components and system assembly.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to conduct detailed failure analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with qualification testing, including setting up test plans and documenting results.
  • Knowledge of hardware automation testing frameworks, Python, shell scripting, and testing processes.
  • Strong understanding of server hardware components, interconnects, assembly, and configuration.
  • Deep understanding of how server hardware interfaces with Linux Drivers and Kernel subsystems.
  • Proficient in tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power analyzers, thermal testing equipment, and other hardware diagnostics equipment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with product managers, engineers, and external vendors.
