As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow, the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the Cloud AI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale, and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for engineers with a passion for customer-focused solutions, insight, and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

We are looking for a Principal Hardware Engineer to join the CAASE team. This Principal Hardware Engineer will play a pivotal role in the development and delivery of custom and differentiating hardware acceleration solutions for Azure. This candidate will collaborate with both internal Microsoft teams and external partners to investigate opportunities to use custom silicon and programmable hardware FPGAs to customize cloud-scale solutions for strategic applications. The candidate will drive the co-development of hardware and software and develop roadmaps, taking lessons learned on FPGAs and refining them into increasingly customized solutions on ASIC and FPGA. The candidate will also drive business considerations including Total Cost of Operation and Return on Investment for various solutions, and drive consensus on sustainable acceleration strategies across teams.

Responsibilities

  1. Analyses performance and presents results and insights to provide recommendations and path forward for the team and architects. Champions recommendations and defends functionality of decisions to architects and management.
  2. Specifies the architecture and microarchitecture of accelerators on FPGA and on custom silicon. Evaluates architecture trade-offs, performance, overall area, power, and complexity.
  3. Advises others on the creation of single/multiple project implementation schedules and anticipates project implementation issues. Proposes changes to project schedules and designs to mitigate risks.
  4. Writes internal device specification sheets. Suggests modifications for internal device specifications and data sheets based on their expertise and anticipation of needs for hardware design and testing of future products. Identifies ways to add value to existing products and testing procedures. Influences future device specifications.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  1. 12+ years of technical engineering experience
  2. OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience
  3. OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years of technical engineering experience
  4. OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience.

Other Requirements

  1. Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:
  2. This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

  1. 18+ years of technical engineering experience
  2. OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 15+ years of technical engineering experience
  3. OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience
  4. OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience.
  5. 5+ years of experience with FPGA design and development

Hardware Engineering IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $209,600 - $314,400 per year.
