Job Summary: The Accounting Manager serves as a critical leader, overseeing a team of 10 accounting professionals and managing the complex fiscal and accounting operations that support service delivery. This position holds significant decision-making authority, tasked with optimizing operational efficiency and implementing sound accounting practices.

The Accounting Manager is responsible for developing and executing strategies to enhance the organizational effectiveness of the fiscal and budgetary functions. Responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with applicable regulations, and the implementation of best practices, this role plays a pivotal part in driving the mission and serving the community effectively.

Duties & Responsibilities: 
  • Develop and implement systems and processes for collecting, analyzing, verifying and reporting financial information. 
  • Manage accounting staff; recruit, train, assign, schedule, coach, counsel, and discipline employees; communicate job expectations; plan, monitor, appraise, and review job contributions; enforce policies and procedures.
  • Assess and maintain internal controls and facilitate solutions with excellent professional judgement. 
  • Implement excellent standards of accounting and best practices.
  • Manage changes around implementing improvement of internal accounting practices. 
  • Write standard operating procedures/methodology for carrying out day-to-day accounting processes and functions. 
  • Facilitate training and create training materials (i.e., worksheets, MS PowerPoint presentations, desk/job aids) targeted at both program and accounting personnel.
  • Ensure the financial integrity of the fiscal responsibility for the department.
  • Assess/Evaluate accounting processes for quality assurance and internal controls and develop plans for continuous improvement and sustainability.
  • Supervise and manage accounting staff.
  • Oversee the development of the department’s annual budget.
  • Oversee the successful execution of contract/agreement processes.
  • Ensure that expenditure is allowable, authorized, and appropriate in the department’s budget.
  • Establish standard operating procedures for accounting-related processes.
  • Create/Oversee revenue plans and actively identify and support grant proposals for new funding resources in support of strategic goals.
  • Establish/Assess key performance data relative to accounting functions and act to improve performance outcomes.
  • Train accounting personnel in best practices for day-to-day accounting functions.
     
  • Facilitate orientation/on-boarding, in-service training, and materials for accounting-related processes.
  • Provide consult to program staff on multi-year budget plans.
  • Establish and support collaborative engagement among teams across organization disciplines.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business management.  Five years of related experience in a supervisory role.
  • Strong leadership skills, a strategic mindset, and a commitment to excellence in financial stewardship.
Preferred Leadership Skills and Values
  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business management. Ten years of experience managing large complex financial operations. CPA licensed.
  • Leads to obtain/gather information/knowledge independently from subject-matter experts, team members and colleagues to gain situational awareness, facilitate solutions to problems, and deliver timely progress reports to Director’s Office.
  • Initiative to resolve or clarify process steps, discrepancies, and conflicts.
  • Exceptional skill in building rapport with authority figures, influencers, team-members, and colleagues.
  • Value for social services and continuous quality improvement.
