Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Accounting Manager responsible for our international accounting and financial reporting functions. Reporting to the Assistant Controller, this position will be a key part of the National Audubon Society (NAS) Finance team and be responsible for handling the day-to-day full accounting functions in support of our global operations. The successful candidate will have experience working in a multi-national environment and knowledge of compliance with global accounting standards and practices, including local accounting regulations in the countries where we operate, with a particular focus on Latin America. This is a hands-on role for someone who is detail and task-oriented, and can combine their deep expertise of local regulations with US GAAP and foreign currency transactions, and the ability to drive system and process improvements across our global operations. This role will be a key liaison between Audubon Americas Finance and Operations team (NAS's International team) and NAS Finance team. The Accounting Manager must be fluent in English and Spanish.

This is a full-time remote position within the United States.

Compensation:

Salary range based on geo-differentials:
  • $69,000-$84,000/year = National
  • $77,000-$92,000/year = Alaska, CA (not San Francisco), Connecticut, D.C., Chicago, Oyster Bay, NY
  • $90,000-$105,000/year = NYC (not Oyster Bay), San Francisco, Seattle

Essential Functions
  • Responsible for the day-to-day general accounting functions, the monthly financial closes and the year-end close processes pertaining to our international transactions.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records and timely processing and recording of financial transactions, including journal entries, accruals, balance sheet reconciliations, monthly bank reconciliations, variance analyses and analytical review.
  • Ensure proper coding of entries for local transactions, and the proper recording in the NAS general ledger.
  • Responsible for intercompany accounting, foreign currency transactions including currency conversions across multiple countries, and consolidations.
  • Responsible for compliance with local accounting regulations including Latin American countries such as Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Panama.
  • Working with the Assistant Controller, manage the preparation of local financial statements, including financial statements under the Colombia Special Tax Regime.
  • Working with the Assistant Controller, coordinate program and grant audits for our international operations.
  • Finance lead liaising with local external accounting firms, local payroll firms, auditors and tax advisors, especially those in Latin America to manage reporting obligations.
  • Support the Assistant Controller and the Accounting team with the annual fiscal year-end close, the preparation of schedules, NAS annual audit including complying with auditor requests for testing, the preparation of Form 990, and other duties such as assigned reconciliation schedules for the NICRA application.
  • Assist with planning, implementation and improvement of monthly and year-end closing processes, including leading the set-up or workbooks.
  • Partner with the NAS Financial Operations team to ensure accurate and timely recording of payables and receivables.
  • Work in close coordination with NAS accounting, financial planning and analysis, and grants teams.
  • Partner with the People and Culture team in ensuring the accuracy of payroll and benefits reporting in local countries and NAS.
  • Be a key financial liaison between Audubon Americas Finance and Operations teams and NAS Finance.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Controller and VP, Controller on new international initiatives.
  • Partner with NAS Finance and NAS Technology in evaluating country-specific financial systems and operational needs and implementing processes for efficient operations and maintaining internal controls and compliance.
  • Collaborate with NAS Technology teams on system implementations or improvements, including troubleshooting issues.
  • Working with the Assistant Controller, create new or enhanced accounting processes and procedures documentation and best practices for local operations.
  • Ensure adherence to internal controls, accounting policies, procedures and statutory requirements in Latin American countries, and in the NAS office.
  • Function as a financial, cultural and linguistic bridge between NAS Finance, Audubon Americas Finance and Operations Team, and local institutions and vendors.
  • Collaborate with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.
  • Other job-related duties as assigned.


Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in international accounting/financial reporting roles in a nonprofit organization, working with diverse funding sources, including public funding. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will also be considered.
  • CPA or equivalent is desirable.
  • Must be fluent in English and Spanish.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate financial management concepts to varied audiences in both English and Spanish.
  • Experience managing accounting functions in Latin American countries such as Colombia and Chile, Mexico and Panama.
  • Experienced in accounting for foreign currency transactions and consolidations.
  • Solid knowledge of US GAAP and local accounting standards for Latin American countries including Colombia.
  • Strong technical accounting skills with complex revenue recognition and consolidations.
  • Team-oriented and ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Advanced MS Office skills, particularly Excel and strong financial systems or ERP expertise, including general ledger.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to partner with a wide range of constituents.
  • Must be well organized, have meticulous attention to detail.
  • Must have a strong follow-through on all projects and can bring projects to timely completion.
