JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Communications Sciences and Disorders (CSD) in the College of Health and Human Development (HHD) at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking candidates for anAmerican Sign Language Interpreter. The interpreter will facilitate, support, and maximize the integration and inclusion of deaf and/or heard of hearing faculty and staff within the college and will support the growth and advancement of our CSD and HHD communities with respectful interactions and relationships with University faculty, staff, and students, as well as visitors and other stakeholders in a variety of settings both on and off campus.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide services for members of the College of Health and Human Development who are deaf and for our college community by interpreting accurately, effectively, and impartially using both expressive and receptive skills of ASL and English.
  • Translate information while conveying the original phrasing, intention, and concepts from the source language; modify and edit translations to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Receive, interpret, and respond to accommodation needs for deaf or hard-of-hearing employees; make recommendations for room set-up; identify ways to facilitate accessible meetings and events.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to understand content, concepts, and information to be translated; identify terms with conflicting meanings and determine alternate translations.
  • Maintain awareness of best practices, emerging trends, and legislation related to interpreter services.
  • Identify opportunities to foster inclusion between deaf and hard-of-hearing employees and the college community.
  • Contribute to the assessment of interpretation services; recommend changes to improve the quality of service.
  • Other duties as assigned are consistent with the mission of the College.


Assignments may include support for instructional classes, staff meetings, professional development training, and additional HHD programming.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a Bachelor's Degree or higher, plus three years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Two years of experience interpreting with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, particularly in a postsecondary setting, is preferred. The successful candidate should have and maintain certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or National Association of the Deaf (NAD), as well as current registration or eligibility for registration with the PA Office for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing.

  • Prepare for assignments to ensure sufficient subject comprehension to deliver effective services.
  • Knowledge of, and adherence to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)/NAD (National Association of the Deaf) ethics of interpreting and professional code of conduct.
  • Willingness to mentor students, both at our university and in the profession of interpreting.
  • Should have the ability to translate complex material and issues using technical vocabulary in instructional settings, meetings, and other assignments.


Additional Information:

This is a 75% Reduced Full-Time Equivalency (FTE) position. Work hours are 40 per week, Monday through Friday from August 15 through May 15. This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire with the possibility of re-funding.

This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.

$68,200.00 - $102,300.00
