Job Summary:

Responsibilities:

Faculty Role

  1. Administer patient care under the supervision and medical direction of an attending Anesthesiologist to include all levels of care.
  2. Monitoring of patient vital signs.
  3. Conducting patient assessments.
  4. Overseeing patient safety before, during, and after surgery.
  5. Titrating anesthetic gases to patient vital signs.
  6. Transfusing blood products.
  7. Document preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care appropriate to the case.
  8. Cooperate with the requirements of the Department's quality assurance review process.
  9. Work shifts at any of the University-affiliated hospitals (UCH Anschutz, Inverness, etc.) to which an individual will be assigned by the scheduler and/or the APP Co-Chiefs.
  10. Work shifts of various length and complexity, sometimes up to 24 hours straight, including nights, weekends, and various call shifts.
  11. Appropriately handle and administer controlled substances such as fentanyl, dilaudid, midazolam, propofol, etc.
  12. Work and function in a care team model to formulate anesthetic plan for best patient outcomes.

Faculty Administrative Role

  1. Perform the CAAHEP program and accreditation requirements.
  2. Work closely with Program Leadership to determine areas for strategic growth.
  3. Support curricular and educational development.
  4. Identify and resource specific needs in program.
  5. Determine and monitor ongoing Program objectives, priorities, and budgets.
  6. Participate in Curriculum Committee and curricular innovation.
  7. Identify and review student applications and conduct interviews with applicants as a member of the Admissions Committee.
  8. Coordinate activities to ensure stated program goals are achieved.
  9. Provide regular updates to the Progress & Promotions Committee regarding student clinical performance.
  10. Assist Program Coordinators with prospective student inquiries regarding academic requirements and programmatic fit.
  11. Provide current student body with direction and be available to provide resources when emergencies arise.
  12. Identify and manage issues which occur while students are on away rotations.
  13. Actively manage and mentor APDs to ensure they are completing their responsibilities in a timely fashion.

Educational

  1. Ensure student performance on NCCAA board certification examination remains at or above the national average.
  2. Develop and implement clinical training goals and objectives.
  3. Ensure the provision of appropriate opportunities to gain clinical competencies and maintain program standards.
  4. Ensure educational adequacy at outside training sites and monitor student progress and clinical experience at those sites.
  5. Develop metrics to evaluate success of clinical curricula.
  6. Directly oversee student clinical evaluations, competencies, and progress.
  7. Develop and implement a student-to-faculty pipeline.
  8. Provide guidance to students on application and interview process for future positions.
  9. Inform Program Leadership of any clinical concerns.
  10. Serve as main contact for all students and faculty regarding clinical concerns.
  11. Manage clinical assignments of all students rotating at UCH and other locations.
  12. Collaborate with "offsite" specialty rotations to convey student goals and expectations.
  13. Work with hospital leadership and staff to assess various learning needs and competency gaps.
  14. Participate in leading senior seminar sessions, literature reviews and professional development discussions.
  15. Serve as didactic instructor for at least one semester per calendar year.

Leadership/Development

  1. Provide oversight for clinical faculty specific to clinical curriculum development.
  2. Collaborate with clinical faculty regarding their evaluations and student feedback.
  3. Facilitate regular instructor meetings to provide feedback on student performance and updates on expectations.
  4. Advise, teach and mentor students to instill sound professionalism and work ethic.
  5. Attend conferences and workshops to enhance knowledge and experience.
  6. Actively mentor APDs and core instructors.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Successful completion of an accredited Anesthesiologist Assistant program.
  2. Active certification by the NCCAA with ongoing re-certification as required.
  3. A minimum of 1 year of clinical experience.
  4. Licensed to practice in the state of Colorado.
  5. Current appointment or be able to be appointed to the University of Colorado School of Medicine faculty.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Leadership and education experience is preferred in consideration of the Program Director role.
