Job Summary

Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as one of the first point of contacts for users of the Maker Space project machine shop. Provide direct instruction to student users of the Machine Shop, using common materials (Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Steel, Brass, Plastics), on the safe usage of all tools available in the Making Spaces.
- Serve as a subject matter instructor for experiential learning classes as well as ME, BME or ECE lab classes that use the Maker Space shop.
- Assist Teaching Assistants in the formal delivery of lab material. Work with Faculty on the design and development of effective lab activities
- Review student drawing packages and models of parts to be produced in the Machine Shop.
- Work with students to understand how the parts fit into a larger assembly, mechanism, or machine.
- Advise students on optimal methods and materials for manufacturing said components.
- Always ensure a safe working environment in the shop. Foster a culture of safety and learning to ensure all users have a positive learning experience while in the shop
- Design and develop shop safety policies and procedures to ensure the safe operation of the Project Machine Shop and assist with proper training procedures for student employees.
- Implement the Hazard Communication and Safety program for the ME student project machine shop. Ensure all required OSHA documentation and training is complete and up to date.
- Maintain tool inventory and coordinate the ordering of tooling each semester. Coordinate the inventory and order supplies as needed for required course project materials used each semester.
- Assist in the maintenance of the equipment in the Making Spaces.
- Design, develop, and maintain outreach training materials to better prepare students prior to using the Shop facilities.
- Evaluate student knowledge and weaknesses when using the shop. Use this information to create and deliver instructional workshops to better prepare students to use the Maker Space Shop
Education and Experience
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in STEM, Education, or related
- Four years of experience in one or more of the following:
- teaching or working in a teaching shop environment
- experience working in a machine and/or fabrication environment
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
Preferred:
- Background in teaching or working in a teaching shop environment
- Knowledge of CNC
Skills
Required:
- Using Manual Machine Tools (Mill, Lathe, Bandsaw, and basic fabrication techniques). CAD software fundamentals using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar software
