The Berkeley Lab's Engineering Division is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer for the ALS-U (Advanced Light Source Upgrade) Project. This role will support the development of new and upgraded experimental facilities, with deliverables valued between $10M-$15M.

The Manufacturing Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, fabrication, and implementation of mechanical systems, detectors, and accelerator components. Expertise in mechanical design, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, instrumentation, and electromagnetics is required to support national scientific programs.

This position requires a proactive, independent engineer who can collaborate with internal teams and external vendors, providing oversight and managing projects that integrate various engineering and scientific components.

What You Will Do:
  • Coordinate fabrication of mechanical assemblies and equipment for national research programs.
  • Create work instructions, quality assurance documents, and test plans for component validation.
  • Write specifications for complex procurements, gathering and organizing technical requirements.
  • Assist in defining performance criteria and specifications for manufacturing, assembly, and testing.
  • Contribute to project scope development, time/cost estimates, and logistics planning.
  • Support the implementation of manufacturing and quality procedures, including non-conformance reporting and change orders.
  • Analyze technical data, designs, specifications, supplier capabilities, and part availability.
  • Collaborate with procurement, engineering, and management teams for vendor oversight and issue resolution.
  • Review vendor documentation for completeness and integrity.
  • Work with technical staff to resolve QC issues and technical challenges with hardware.
  • Track material status from fabrication to final acceptance using inventory management software.
  • Travel to vendors and trade shows as needed.
  • Design test support equipment (adapters, fixtures, installations, reconfigurations).


What is Required:

Manufacturing Engineer Level 2:
  • B.S. in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or similar) and 2+ years of related experience, or equivalent.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting assembly, detail, and weldment drawings.
  • Knowledge of mechanical/manufacturing considerations for project procurement.
  • Expertise in manufacturing and assembly practices for equipment like particle accelerators or other scientific equipment.
  • Ability to provide engineering oversight and manage projects integrating multiple engineering and scientific components.
  • Apply professional expertise to resolve issues within company policies and procedures.
  • Familiarity with dimensional metrology, GD&T, and Product Data Management software.

In Addition to the Above, Manufacturing Engineer Level 3:
  • B.S. in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (or similar) and 5+ years of relevant experience, or equivalent.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling software and structural analysis (hand calculations/ANSYS).
  • Experience with inventory management in production environments of any scale.


Desired Qualifications:

Manufacturing Engineer Level 2:
  • Experience in a Research & Development environment.
  • Experience with parametric 3D CAD modeling software.
  • Experience in structural analysis using hand calculations or FEA (e.g., ANSYS).
  • Experience with inventory management in production environments.


Salary:

Manufacturing Engineer Level 2:

The expected salary for this position is $106,000.00 - $129,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $94,164.00 - $158,856.00 per month depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Manufacturing Engineer Level 3:

The expected salary for this position is $130,000.00 - $158,000.00, which fits into the full salary of $115,176.00 - $194,340.00 per month depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Notes:
  • This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
