General Description of Duties

Under administrative direction, the purpose of the position is to perform highly responsible work managing the Sports and Event Facilities Office. Employees in this classification function in a middle management capacity and are responsible for overseeing the operations and administration of the Sports and Events Facilities Office. This includes planning and organization of services to the public, supervision of personnel and development of administrative procedures. Employee works with considerable independence in the performance of regularly assigned duties.

Essential Job Functions

  • Directs the activities of the Sports and Event Facilities Office, including planning, organization, and implementation of the goals and objectives of Sports and Events Facilities; coordinates and integrates activities toward achievement of established goals and objectives of the County's Comprehensive and strategic plans.
  • Manages development, implementation, and control of the budget for the Sports and Events Facilities Office; ensures all functions and programs under charge are performed within established budgetary parameters, to include performing cost control activities, monitoring revenues and expenditures, and ensuring sound fiscal control.
  • Position has direct supervision of facilities to include Austin Tindall Sports Complex as well as the oversight of the management contract for Osceola Heritage Park.
  • Acts as liaison to a variety of organizations and entities, monitoring and facilitating agreements where assigned, with special attention to activities at the sports and events facilities mentioned above.
  • Oversees and manages professional development of office staff which includes goal setting, coaching, counseling, etc.
  • Attends meetings, professional conferences, and institutes; attends, participates, presents, and/or leads a variety of management, executive, and administrative meetings to keep up with trends in Sports and Events Facilities issues, legislative changes, and funding concerns.
  • Oversees contracts for various consulting and professional services in a manner consistent with established policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of critical executive/administrative records and reports.
  • Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's Degree in Sports or Facility Venue Management or a closely related field.

Experience:

Five (5) years of progressively responsible management experience, including oversight of contracts, in a related field; or any equivalent combination of related education, training, and experience.

Miscellaneous:
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License.
  • Some public sector experience is a plus.
  • Ability to write and speak in English and Spanish a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of methods and practices in developing and operating public sporting and events facilities such as stadiums, arenas, fields, and related event facilities maintenance and management.
  • Knowledge of management practices and safety requirements for buildings and facilities used for public assembly.
  • Knowledge and experience in contract management and facility development.
  • Skill in understanding and expressing ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Skill in interpersonal and leadership communications; ability to communicate professionally verbally, in writing, and in presentations.
  • Public relations skills are needed to productively work with civic, recreation, and community groups.
  • Skill in reading, analyzing, and interpreting professional periodicals and journals, and documentation.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state, federal, and local laws, rules, ordinances, and regulatory standards applicable to the work; ability to interpret and communicate activities and issues to the general public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of budget development and administration, and the challenges associated with administering multiple budget resource areas.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
  • Ability to read, update, and maintain various records and files; ability to access, operate, and maintain various software applications.

  • Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 10 pounds.
