What You Will Be Doing:
Overall responsibility for activities of assigned personnel in evaluating and accepting applications for life insurance with face amounts exceeding $2 billion annually. Manages and coordinates staffing, work assignments, employee performance and productivity of personnel. Utilizes life insurance underwriting expertise and aptitude of technique, practice and theory in the underwriting decision-making process. Responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. Responsible for reviewing and submitting special underwriting programs for overall performance in the Life Insurance company. Performs personnel functions including hiring, employee development and guidance, performance appraisals, work audits and salary reviews. Leads and/or participates in various projects, committees, meetings and training programs at company and department levels. Works closely with the Manager of Life Insurance Engagement and Operations to support all aspects of Life Underwriting.
What We're Looking For:
Responsible for the acquisition, retention, and development of underwriter talent. Manages, guides, mentors, and coaches’ underwriters in process, organizational, communication and professional skills through performance appraisals and salary reviews, recommendations for promotion, and disciplinary action. Coaching includes case reviews and decision documentation. Implements a strategy to better evaluate and analyze risk quality utilizing underwriter skillsets to qualify, select, and assess risk. Fosters relationship management with agents and field leadership. Responsible for communication strategy to foster supportive business relationships between field and home office. Ensures the underwriting team follows all applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulations governing the underwriting/selection of risks and that they are aligned with expected mortality and morbidity performance. Oversees and facilitates the ongoing transformation of the underwriting process to create sustainable and engaging member experiences, focused on reducing cycle time and eliminating process friction. Will also oversee the evolution of underwriting through automation, special underwriting programs, modifying underwriting standards, and reinsurance matters. Prepares and ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and are adhering to approved budgets. Directs training of personnel and helps develop and participate in company and department training sessions. Communicates procedural and regulatory changes to employees and agents. Reviews company reports to determine if new business practices are achieving goals and initiates or suggests action as necessary. Researches, analyzes and recommends changes in processes in use of technology to improve risk assessment. Prepares special reports and performs other duties as required by the Director or Senior Vice President. 12 years experience in Life Insurance underwriting and management experience. Ability to perform essential functions of the job, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
