The Leidos Innovation Center (LInC) is searching for an Optical Design Engineer to join our Electro-Optics (EO) Research Team in Dayton, OH. The successful candidate will utilize a strong engineering or physics background designing, testing, modeling, simulating, and analyzing the next generation of optical systems for space-based applications.

This position will support multiple aspects of the design and manufacturing process of optical lens systems. Addressing our customers' challenging mission requirements necessitates critical thinking and complex problem solving. The successful candidate will be called upon to develop new and innovative solutions to challenging optical design problems. The engineer will work as part of an integrated team but should also be proficient at working independently.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Design, analyze, and improve optical system designs in Zemax OpticStudio, Code-V, or equivalent
  • Design and execute optical system and component testing
  • In-depth understanding of technical principles, theories, and concepts related to optical design
  • Perform analysis of data sets and develop tools for visualization and manipulation of the data
  • Lead work of other technical staff with significant impact on project results and impact
  • Work well in a small team environment
  • Be familiar with Linux, Windows, MS Office tools like PowerPoint and Excel, MATLAB
  • Present project results to internal team for reviews, customers, and at workshops / conferences

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in an engineering discipline (optical, engineering physics, or similar) or physics with 12+ years of experience or Masters degree with 10+ years of experience
  • 12+ years experience designing lens systems
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET security clearance
  • Experience with optical design, broadband light sources, electro-optics, detectors, cameras, calibration equipment, and diagnostic equipment
  • MATLAB and/or Python programming experience
  • Optical design software experience (e.g. Zemax, Code-V, etc.)
  • Can communicate results to executive leadership, internal or customer

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in optical engineering or physics
  • Strong statistics education or experience
  • Experience testing lens systems experimentally to ensure they meet spec as-designed
  • Stray light analysis experience

Pay Range: Pay Range $126,100.00 - $227,950.00
