Job DescriptionMicrochip’s Frequency and Time Systems business unit is a world leader in precise time solutions and sets the world's standard for time. Our work distributes and applies precise time for the communications, aerospace, defense, IT infrastructure, and metrology industries. Frequency and Timing Systems is expanding our business in global timescales, digital signal processing, satellite communications, airborne timing, and navigation systems.
Our Government Systems group in Boulder, CO is seeking a Principal Engineer-Hardware to lead and contribute to hardware designs for R&D programs. This position is a fit for someone that enjoys technical achievement, cooperative research, never-ending chances to learn, and a friendly team environment. You will participate in a wide variety of projects and contribute to all phases of the full design lifecycle, including concept development, design, test and validation, sustainment and next generation planning. Essential Responsibilities:
- Create, analyze, support, and improve electronic designs including PCB’s and PCBA’s for Government Systems products.
- Work within cross-functional teams of systems, software, FPGA and mechanical engineers to develop novel solutions that meet customer needs.
- Conduct design reviews showing design completeness, conformance to requirements, robustness, and expected yields.
- Write and review product requirements and specifications.
- Establish and maintain relationships with key partners and suppliers.
- Coordinate closely with manufacturing during new product introduction.
- Coach and mentor junior engineers.
- This in-office position is located in Boulder, Colorado and may require some occasional travel.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum BSEE and 10+ years of industry experience or equivalent combination of education and experience with a track record of increasing responsibility including:
- Specification, analysis, design, test, and troubleshooting of PCB’s and PCBA’s.
- Knowledge of PCB and PCBA manufacturing processes, procedures, and best practices.
- Ability to design with discrete electronic components, FPGA’s, microprocessors, memory devices and logic devices and interfaces.
- Good written and interpersonal communication skills.
- US Citizenship Required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- PCB Schematic and Layout (PADS and Altium preferred).
- Familiarity with precise timing applications and components, including oscillators, time measurement circuits, and GPS receivers.
- Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Analog circuits.
- RF electronics.
- Signal integrity for high-speed serial interfaces.
- Power integrity analysis.
- Control systems, including analog control loops.
- Data acquisition and signal reproduction.
- Understanding of project management principles.
- Unix and/or Linux experience including scripting.
- Programming – candidate should list any programming languages/frameworks with which they have significant experience.

Pay Range:
The annual base salary range for this position, which could be performed in Colorado, is $70,000-$163,000.*
- Range is dependent on numerous factors including job location, skills and experience.
