JOB TITLE: Phlebotomist

DEPARTMENT: Laboratory

REPORTS TO: Laboratory Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:
  • Is accountable for the delivery of consistently high quality work during their assigned shift.
  • Functions under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager.
  • Is accountable for the effective, efficient and safe operations of the Laboratory ensuring that the objectives of the Laboratory department and the organization are met.
  • Ensures appropriate organizational and patient safety practices are in use.
  • Promotes good public relations through contacts with patients, practitioners, visitors, employees, peers and the public at large.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Responsible for specimen collections at hospital and rest homes.
  2. Accessioning specimens, and preparing samples for reference laboratory testing and other specimens that are referred to other laboratories for testing.
  3. Greets patients in a friendly manner and following departmental policies for patient identification, specimen collection and labeling.
  4. Printing and/or distributing test reports as indicated.
  5. Secretarial duties as needed.
  6. Assist in training and orientation of new personnel.
  7. Maintain a clean, safe working environment.
  8. Assists in maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  9. Assists in maintaining departmental reports and records as directed.
  10. Assists in implementing department specific goals and objectives in keeping with overall Laboratory and organizational goals and objectives.
  11. Assists in maintaining adequate and effective communication between the Laboratory and ancillary departments for problem solving.
  12. Interacts with others (on the phone or in person) in a positive, professional and appropriate manner.
  13. Works cooperatively with others. Has respect for and an understanding of the contributions of all team members.
  14. Attends required meetings and participates in educational programs.
  15. Protects patient confidentiality by promoting appropriate staff communication practices.
  16. Works shifts as required.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned

High School Graduate or GED

0 - 6 months phlebotomy experience

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Frequent contact with water or other liquid. Sufficient noise to cause distraction or possible hearing loss. Conditions where this is danger to life, body and/or health.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens.
  • May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases.
  • Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases.
  • Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances.
  • Exposed to odorous chemicals, specimens and patient related odors.
  • Exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness).
  • Handles emergency or crisis situations.
  • Subject to many interruptions.
  • Occasionally subject to long irregular hours.
  • Handles absentee replacement on short notice.
  • Travel required.
