I. Position Summary
The Chief Operations Officer (COO) must be a skilled, detail-oriented leader who is passionate about the welfare and support of at-risk families. This position is responsible for the day-to-day administrative and operational functions of Homeless No More and its primary programs of Family Shelter, St. Lawrence Place, and Live Oak housing.
The COO focuses on operational excellence, resource management, and cross-functional collaboration to drive the organization's success.
This position works with the chief executive officer (CEO) to create, communicate, execute, and sustain strategic initiatives within the organization. This position serves as part of the organization’s executive team and provides operational support to the Board of Directors.
The COO is responsible for implementing the organization’s strategic plan. He/she works collaboratively with all senior leaders in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment to position the organization as a thought leader and key stakeholder in the community.
The COO manages several diverse teams including operations, administrative, and programs as they relate to shelter operations at Family Shelter and St. Lawrence Place and affordable housing units throughout the Midlands of South Carolina. This position also oversees the team responsible for delivering services to the hundreds of homeless families and children served by the organization each year.
This position plays a critical role in embedding equity in Homeless No More’s work; bringing expertise, an innovative and open mindset, and a commitment to inclusive practice that values the different backgrounds and life experiences of all team members, and the families served.
II. Duties and Responsibilities
Budget Oversight
(with financial team and CPA firm) Oversight of an administrative team that is responsible for account payables and receivables, payroll, benefits, HR, banking relationships, grant budgets, and other financial matters of the agency. · Assist in the creation of the agency’s budget based on YTD and historical data · Oversight of the agency budget · Maintaining up-to-date cash on hand and cash flow statements · Serve as POC for the agency’s audit · Serve as POC for the agency’s banking/financial relationships · Create and implement appropriate financial policies and procedures · Responsible for regular assessment of contracts Operations Oversight
(with operations and maintenance teams) Oversight of an operations team that is responsible for the day-to-day upkeep and maintenance of two shelter campuses (Family Shelter and St. Lawrence Place), administrative space, vacant properties awaiting development, and existing rental properties (managed by a contracted property management company). · Hold the operations team accountable for a daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual capital improvement plan. · Responsible for the assessment of vendor contracts. · Ensure appropriate safety measures and protocols are in place for clients and staff. · Oversight of IT needs of the agency. (with executive and administrative teams) With the Chief Executive Officer participates in hiring, managing, and coaching team members to enhance their performance and responsibilities, conduct evaluations, and ensure adherence to organizational documentation and policy standards. · Provide ongoing support to Homeless No More team members to help meet goals and objectives while ensuring policies and procedures are followed. · Oversee staffing to align with the organization's evolving strategy, providing guidance alongside HR and the CEO. · Ensure all departments work efficiently as a team, maintain high morale, and ensure safe working conditions for employees. · Recommend and implement management strategies and reporting procedures to ensure the team has up-to-date situational awareness of all core issues and operating data needed to make sound decisions. · Lead the design and implementation of policies and procedures that align with the agency’s culture and vision, with CEO approval. Other Duties · Serve as a positive, proactive voice for Homeless No More through internal communication and representing the organization at training and events. · Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested with an appropriate sense of humor, positive and professional attitude, and team spirit. · Homeless No More believes that each employee makes a significant contribution to our success; this position description is designed to outline primary duties, qualifications, and job scope, but not limit the organization to adjust the work identified; we expect that each team member will offer their services wherever and whenever necessary to ensure the success of our endeavors. III. Qualifications Skills · Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills with internal and external stakeholders at all levels · Must lead in a way that inspires and motivates team members · Must be able to identify problems, analyze data/solutions, and make informed decisions · Must effectively resolve challenges as they relate to programmatic (client-based) and organizational issues · Must be able to manage complex details with a structured approach · Capable of quickly switching between environments and activities; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available · Can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary. Experience/Education · Master’s degree in business, finance, or strategy or equivalent professional experience in those specific areas
OR · Have at least ten years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; advanced knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, and coordination of people and resources. · Have at least five years of experience in managing individuals and teams, setting business goals, resource planning, and managing overall employee performance; effective leadership techniques are required to ensure high performance. Miscellaneous · Manage light to moderate carrying and lifting of items. · Drive and travel throughout South Carolina and nationally as needed. · Demonstrate proficiency in all Microsoft Office Suite products and other relevant technology. IV. Compensation This is a regular, full-time position with benefits. This is an in-office position. Administrative offices are located in Columbia, South Carolina. Salary range: $87,000 - $110,000 Hiring range: $87,000 - $98,000 About Homeless No More:
