At HRL, we engage in the development of a full quantum device and computation stack, including an optimizing compiler for a quantum programming language. Supervisory Responsibilities:In addition to technical work, you will have leadership responsibilities, helping shape the direction of compiler and programming language development activities at HRL.Essential Duties:As a Principal Software Engineer within the Quantum Programming group, you will be a core contributor to this stack, including both maintenance and significant new feature development. We build two "full stack" compilers, one for a strictly typed functional programming language called Coalton, and one for a quantum programming language. The compilers are primarily written in Common Lisp, and interfaces with a lot of software, both as a library and as a stand-alone application. As such, in this role, you will have opportunities to work on both quantum compilers, classical compilers, as well as open-source Lisp compilers.Required Skills:Superb understanding of operating system fundamentals, the C ABI, programming language runtimes, and programming language implementationExcellent skills in profiling and debuggingPractical knowledge of several different programming language paradigms, including functional and logic programming.Near-expertise in static and strong functional typing disciplines.Experience doing academic research in computer science or mathematics is a plusDemonstrated skills on a non-trivial programming language implementation.Outstanding programming skills, including full cycle software development with GitExcellent code review and mentorship skillsKnowledge of quantum computing and quantum mechanics is preferredKnowledge of Common Lisp (We use Steel Bank Common Lisp) is preferredFamiliarity with scientific and numerical computing is a plus.Required Education:Bachelors in mathematics or computer science, or equivalent knowledge gained through industry experienceSpecial Requirements:US CitizenshipAbility to obtain and maintain a US Government Security clearanceCompensation:The base salary range for this full-time position is $204,665 - $262,243 + bonus + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
