JOB TITLE: POST ANESTHESIA CARE UNIT REGISTERED (PACU) NURSE

SUMMARY
The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Registered Nurse (RN) plays a crucial role in the recovery and care of patients following surgery or procedures requiring anesthesia. Working in a fast-paced environment, the PACU RN provides comprehensive nursing care to patients as they emerge from anesthesia, monitoring their vital signs, managing pain, and ensuring their safety and comfort during the recovery process.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)
- Conduct thorough assessments of patients in the PACU, evaluating vital signs, airway status, pain level, fluid/electrolyte balance, and overall condition following surgery or procedures requiring anesthesia.
- Monitor patients closely during the initial recovery phase, including respiratory status, hemodynamic stability, and potential complications. Utilize cardiac monitoring, pulse oximetry, and other appropriate devices to ensure patient safety while minimizing infection rates, revisit rates, complications, and adverse events.
- Manage patients' pain effectively using pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Collaborate with anesthesia providers and other team members to develop individualized pain management plans.
- Maintain a patent airway for patients who require assistance with breathing post-anesthesia. Administer supplemental oxygen, perform suctioning as needed, and intervene promptly in cases of respiratory compromise.
- Provide patients and their families with education about the recovery process, including post-operative care instructions and potential complications to monitor at home.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated patient care. Communicate pertinent information regarding patient conditions, responses to treatment, and discharge plans.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of patient assessments, interventions, medications administered, and other relevant information in patients' medical charts. Ensure all documentation is complete, timely, and meets regulatory standards.
- Assess patients' readiness for discharge and coordinate their transfer to the appropriate level of care. Provide discharge instructions to patients and their families.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient safety, improving clinical outcomes, and optimizing care delivery within the PACU.
- Adhere to facility policies, protocols, and HIPAA guidelines to ensure patient confidentiality and compliance with regulatory standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice.
- Associate degree in nursing (ADN) at minimum.
- Certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Prior experience in perioperative nursing, critical care, or emergency care preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and to talk and hear. Employees may be occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Employees must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds along with pushing and pulling on higher BMI patients. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, employees may be exposed to risk of infectious diseases when interacting with patients and/or family members. The employee may be occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
