Position: Captain Company: Shaver Transportation Summary Overview: The Captain is responsible for safely and efficiently operating vessels, managing the crew, and ensuring adherence to safety and company policies on the Columbia, Willamette, Snake River, and Near Coastal Waters. Key Responsibilities: Safely operate tugs and barges under various river and weather conditions. Supervise vessel, crew, and equipment to ensure safety, cleanliness, and operational efficiency. Navigate using radar, charts, and other tools, adjusting strategies as needed. Maintain communication with dispatch and report policy or legal violations. Conduct inspections of vessel quarters, safety equipment, and barges. Train crew on emergency procedures, fire drills, and safety systems. Qualifications: Experience operating tugs. Master of Tow or equivalent. Merchant Mariner's Credential (M.M.C.) and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Valid driver's license. Pass medical, physical, and drug testing (U.S. Coast Guard standards). Strong reading comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills. Previous maritime experience preferred. Physical Requirements: Ability to safely ascend/descend stairs, lift equipment, and perform emergency duties. Good hearing, vision (including color and depth perception), and communication skills. Work Conditions: Work in all weather conditions, including long shifts and short notice. Rotational schedules: 7 days on/7 days off for live-aboard vessels. Harbor work on day boats.
