Accounting Manager

PositionSummary:

Thisposition isresponsible for providing daily guidance, supervisionand directionfortheaccounting personnelwithin Finance,overseeingthegeneralledgeractivities,fixedassets,andreconciliations to ensure adequate compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and ensuring adequate control of the universitys financial resources.

As a leader on the Accounting and Financial Reporting Team, the Accounting Manager is responsible for theaccountingfunctionsoftheuniversity.Theworkinvolvesapplying professionalaccountingprinciples andtechniquestothetransactionstoensurethattheuniversitysfinancialstatementsareinaccordance with GAAP.

AbouttheWorkUnit:

The Accounting and Financial Reporting team is the single point of contact for all centralized accounting and financial reporting activities of the university. This team maintains the general ledger and chart ofaccounts and implements internalcontrolsto ensurethe integrity offinancialrecordsand reporting for Vanderbilt. This team collaboratively approaches accounting and financial reporting topics and questions and maintains effective and efficient accounting operations that ensure the accuracyoffinancialinformationincompliancewithallfinancialregulationsanduniversitypoliciesand procedures.

KeyFunctionsandExpected Performance:

• Ensureaccuracyandintegrityofgeneralledgeraccountsincludingrevenue,expense,assets,and liabilities in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
• Overseethemonth-endgeneralledgercloseprocessandreconciliationsofbalancesheet accounts ensuring prompt resolution of any identified discrepancies
• Overseefixedassetaccountingandinventoryprocessesworkingwiththefixedassetteamto ensure accurate andtimely recording offixedassettransactionsand adherencetouniversity policies and procedures
• Participateinquarterlyandannualfinancialreportingprocessesincludingassistinginfootnote preparing, review of financial statements, and variance analysis in support of the financial reporting function.
• Provideleadershipinmentoringandtrainingqualitystaffthroughrecruitment,retentionand development including providing guidance to accounting staff to ensure daily operations run efficiently
• Serve as functional lead on all financial system(s)projects and maintenance to ensure efficient servicing and improved and/or enhanced financial functions. Collaborates on selection, modificationandimplementationoffinancialsystems.Assistinproductdevelopment,training, business process review and written procedures.
• Analyzefinancialdataandpreparereportsforsenior management
• Workwithvariousareaswithintheuniversitytoexpediteresolutiontoaccountingissues
• Leadprocessimprovementprojectsrelatedtoaccountingprocessesandsystems.Helpsidentify and prioritize project work for all systems and processes related to Finance and Oracle ERP modules.

Supervisory Relationships:

Thispositionhasdirectsupervisoryresponsibilityoverthe Accountingteam.Thispositionreports administratively and functionally to the Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting.

EducationandCertifications:

• ABachelorsdegreefromanaccreditedinstitutionofhighereducationisnecessary.
• ABachelorsdegreewithanemphasisinaccountingorfinanceispreferred.
• CPAorMACC/MBA ispreferred.

ExperienceandSkills:

• 5yearsofrelatedexperience isrequired.8+yearsofrelevantexperienceincludingsupervisionis preferred.
• SkillinadvancedExcel,Word,andPowerPointapplicationsisnecessary.
• Timemanagementskillsandtheabilitytoworkwellinateamenvironmentisnecessary.
• Experienceinhighereducationwithfocuson generalledgerandfixedassetaccounting is preferred.
• Experienceinaninternalservicedeliveryroleispreferred.
• Solid working knowledge of accounting principles and practices, auditing methods and procedures,applicablefederalprivacylawsandregulations,financialanalysis, externalreporting, and budget is preferred.
• AdvancedunderstandingofEnterpriseResourcePlanning(ERP)systemsand GeneralLedgersis preferred.
• Provendetail-orientedworkstyleincollaborationwitheffectivewrittenandverbal communication skills is preferred.
• Abilitytobuildandmaintaineffectiveworkingrelationshipswitharangeofpeople, understanding their needs and goals is preferred.
